The relive part makes it difficult to choose. I'd love to witness WW2 from an untouchable viewpoint. To witness some of the bigger battles, but if I actually had to relive it. I'm going to choose the height of the Roman Empire. Witness the Gladiatorial Games, the forum, circus maximus, maybe a few orgiesI mean... the baths.
Honestly, I would love to relive the Trinity nuclear bomb test, if only to see how everyone everyone reacted at the time. The explosion itself is all well and good, but I want to see what its creators thought moments after.
Also the burning of Rome, to see if Nero was as talented a musician as they say.

Eh, none, really. I like modern technology and society. Medicine and hygiene and relative lack of lynch mobs in particular.

OT: Um... since the thread title and OP ask different questions, I'll answer both:
Historical event: not really sure... there are a few... Battle of Ilipa would be a good one, all however many days of it it was. Um... Battle of Kursk, for the biggest tank fest with live rounds ever... the accession and coronation of Frederick III, but I think I'd be depressed for a long time... I'm sure there are others, but I can't think of them at the moment... -_-
Historical period: again, not really sure... maybe mid-Republic Rome, though I'd really be tempted to constantly heckle Cato and throw rotten food at him... can't think of much else (mostly healthcare related issues) -_-
2nd Kursk Tankfest recommendation (though only if I lived, obviously, not gonna recommend it if I burned to death, duh).

I'm going to stay out of any era with significantly worse hygiene/safety/medicinal standards, since just a cut or two will be the death of me. Similarly, no wars, no lethal radiation, etc. I want to survive my visit. Preferably very little language gap, since it'll be pretty boring to hear Roman centurions give speeches if I don't understand Latin.
So, with those guidelines in mind, probably Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech. Maybe not the most exciting answer, but I'd still get a lot out of it.

Come to think of it, I might rather want to see Buddy Holly. Little known fact was that Waylon Jennings was Buddy's bass player on that tour. He would have been on the plane if he hadn't given up his seat to the Big Bopper, who fell ill from being in the cold tour bus. The third and final seat on the plane was for Buddy's guitarist, Tommy Allsup, but Richie Valens challenged Tommy to a coin toss for that seat. Obviously, Richie won the toss.
There were a lot of strange twists of fate around the world that night, weren't there? That night could be an entire time period in and of itself.
