Voldemort was in Slytherin. Bellatrix Lestrange was in Slytherin. You mention like three characters, and think they're the most prominent, when they're not.
But that's just two alumni. Hell, Slughorn's another alumnus, he's just a bumbling dunce with a guilty concience. Everyone else of the Slyth people we meet during Hogwarts (Draco, Crabbe, Goyle, Blaise, Pansy, etc.) are usually depicted as guffawing jerks, none of whom seem to be particularly bright, just eager to ***** and deride without actually accomplishing anything.

Sooooooo eeeeeeevil.
You keep mentioning freaking children, when Slytherin was the house for several death eaters, Dolores Umbridge, and Lucius Malfoy. I can't even take you seriously. I think Slytherin wasn't allowed to take part in the hogwarts battle, because they weren't sure what side they'd be on.

Merlin was in Slytherin, one of the strongest wizards.
And you identify with these horrible people?
Merlin believed that wizards should help Muggles and live peacefully with them.[2] To this end, he founded the Order of Merlin, an organisation which promoted Muggle rights, creating rules against using magic on them.[2]
What's so horrible about that? You're kind of ignoring that they weren't all evil.
Ah yes, I forgot about Sir-not-appearing-in-the-books. Seems like a conciliatory exception if you ask me.

I would like to think Hufflepuff. They seem nice and I am pretty loyal, its just the hardworking bit will be a problem.
If I fail Hufflepuff then perhaps Ravenclaw because I'm smart but the laziness might let me down again. Slytherin I wouldn't survive, and not brave enough for Griffindor.
Also Hufflepuff is near the kitchens. I would demand to be placed there.

Andromeda Tonks and Alastor Moody seem like pretty decent people to me. What do you have against Slytherins?

Edit: I take back the Moody bit. After research it seems his house was unknown.
Why does every fan fiction ever seem to have him in Slytherin?

Pottermore and such keep sorting me into Gryffindor, which is funny, really, because I wouldn't consider myself courageous by any stretch of the imagination. I'd probably sort myself into Hufflepuff...at least, if it wasn't for the second part of the "loyal and hardworking" thing. Loyalty's probably my greatest strength, but the idea of me being hardworking is even more comical than me being courageous. Ambition isn't much stronger, so I guess process of elimination throws me in Ravenclaw...though I guess either Hufflepuff or Gryffindor could work. The series always did make a big deal about not knowing your own strengths until you face adversity, so I might surprise myself. Who knows.

Hard to tell whether I'd be sorted based on general morality and ideals or talents. So...Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw. Using foreknowledge, I'd probably choose the former. I mean, having to solve a riddle just to go to bed at night? Lame.

I'd check this Pottermore thing people have been mentioning, but apparently, you need to wait until you're in a part of the story before you can do squat. What the hell is this?

Since it's all about learning, knowledge and general academia, I'd expect to be placed in Ravenclaw. Certainly when I was at school that would have suited me.

I'd like to think Gryffindor but I just doubt I'd truly have the bravery/courage to qualify! Certainly not to any exceptional standard.

Pottermore sorted me into Hufflepuff, I think it suits my down to earth personality.

Pottermore puts me in Ravenclaw, and I agree; I've always loved learning and most of my time spent on the internet has me learning about something or other, lol.
Some people also see me as a little eccentric I think...

Pottermore says I'm Slytherin, but I always thought I'd be better suited to Ravenclaw. I love knowledge.

If not them, it would be Hufflepuff. I'm not brave at all, nor am I ruthless (or determined, for a slightly less Slytherins'-are-evil view). And I guess I'm good at.... finding things.

What the HELL is a Hufflepuff? :p

(I blame my girlfriend for that)
I'm glad someone got that reference. More people need to watch that musical. :D

Now I think about it...there aren't any main characters from Hufflepuff in the books apart from Cedric, are there? They really don't have a good reputation.

I'm the laziest sack of shit in the universe, so Hufflepuff is definitely out. I have no ambitions in my life aside from "make enough money to not have to worry much about money", so Slytherin is out. I'm highly intelligent, but I despise studying and schoolwork and only ever did the bare minimum to get through my courses, so Ravenclaw's out.

I don't particularly view myself as courageous or daring or whatever either, but I'm not diametrically opposed to the ideal(s) of Gryffindor, so I guess I'd ultimately wide up there.

Generally if asked to describe my personality, most people who I have spent more than five minutes with me would go one of two ways. Smart, if they like me. Obnoxious know-it-all, if they don't. So Ravenclaw it is. Especially since my "ends justify the means" consequentialist morality doesn't fit well with the Gryffindor ideas of nobility, and I'm not really selfish (my morality includes the idea that sacrificing yourself or your family/friends for a objective greater good is a very very moral thing to do) so Slytherin is out. And I don't know why Hufflepuff even exists.

Ravenclaw.

But I stopped giving a shit about Hogwarts houses because they mean absolutely nothing. Hermione (about as Ravenclaw as it gets) was thrown into Griffindor, and Neville (about as Hufflepuff as it gets) was also thrown in Griffindor. Also how the hell did Sirius get into Griffindor when practically all his family/relatives were Slytherins? Why was James Potter sorted into Griffindor even though he came across as a bullying selfish asshat through all his younger years? The inconsistencies go goes on and on.

And there there is Slytherin - through all 7 books there are only like 1 or 2 people from Slytherin who AREN'T cartoonishly evil dickheads. When you have a house that seems to produce nothing but dark wizards and jerks, one would think the wizarding world would be greatly improved if whoever the Sorting Hat sorted into Slytherin was simply killed on the spot or sent back home.

I get they were childrens' books but that excuse doesn't really carry all the way to 5th, 6th and 7th books which were more like teen/young-adult fiction (what with all the brutal deaths happening).

I'm one of the least brave people I know, I'm not all that intelligent, I hate power, and I'm a lazy slob. So yeah, no idea which of these wonderful houses I'd be shoved into.

Never really liked the idea of houses, it's just a mix between cliques and frats. Kind of a messed up way to school eleven year olds if you ask me.

I was always a Slytherin boy. That used to upset me when I was a kid, but nowadays I welcome it.

Hufflepuffs: True, loyal, not afraid of toil. (Far too lazy, not a commitment person.)
Ravenclaw: Those of wit & learning. (Memory disability; I can learn, but I can't remember, horrid at math.)
Gryffindor: Brave, daring, chivalrous. (Sounds like a bunch of jocks, preps, & politically/religiously motivated people.)
Slytheins: Use any means to achieve their ends. (Takes advantage of situations & operates from the shadows? Sure)

Hermione was only in Griffindor because she wanted to be, she mentions that. Neville displays true bravery where it counts, which is all Griffindor cares about. James... I dunno, he probably started out nice enough and got cocky, running with the crew he was with. And Sirius isn't a dick, and family members aren't always in the same house- Padma and Parvati Patil(I think?) are in Ravenclaw and Griffindor respectively.
I don't disagree with you about Slytherin, though- least they could do is have a counselling course for people considered dickish enough to be in there.

OP: I'd be in Ravenclaw, of course- I'd be desperate to get in there, and the hat'd be like "Oh, yeah, whatever, OK. You sure? You're kind of an ass, maybe- alright, whatever"

According to pottermore, Gryffindor. Something to do with being brave, dashing, heroic, fast acting and, well, uh... Yeah. That's about it really.

Slytherin probably, since I'd want to gain as much power as possible and immortality, but I'd try to get those without screwing people over or killing them if at all possible. I'm also smart enough to realize that life under ol Voldy wouldn't be pleasant, so I'd probably end up fighting him.
