Battlefield 3 has a very very tiny chance of beating COD this year. So let's just say for a second that it does beat COD. When I say beat, I mean becomes more popular with players and earns higher sales. What does that mean for you? How about the game industry?

I'm not talking about it beating Black ops. It just has to beat the COD coming out this year.

then hopefully people will realize that releasing very similar gameplay year after year doesn't work?

oh wait, guitar hero already proved that.

Beat it in what? Gameplay quality? Story quality(HA!)? In terms of sales? In terms of how many people end up playing in the long run?

Guessing its sales, since even if its perfection in physical form, if it doesn't sell, well I don't think I need to explain.

Anyway, it won't beat it in sales, but if by some tiny chance it does, well then I don't know. Maybe Activision will have its CoD studio's try something a bit different with the series.

For me: nothing.
For the games industry: a whole lot of people will be doing a whole lot of talking about something that nobody in his/her right mind would give a crap about.

It will only matter to the developers and publishers, everyone else will just keep playing the games they like. No big deal

I think it'll probably win in sales. 'lotta PC gamers been waitin' for this.

I'm just hoping multiplayer is still about huge scale warfare. Since the single player doesn't suggest that, and EA has been pushing the single player a lot, I'm worried it won't really be battlefield.

"very very tiny chance"
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL-wut?

OT: If Battlefield 3 does better, than Call of Duty will either adapt and improve, or die out. Either way we all benefit.

I for one would love to see Battlefield 3 beat out COD, and I think that would be a good thing because it would show Activision that they are not infallible with COD and hopefully make that series into something better, if not different.

What would it mean for me though? Absolutely nothing, I'm not big fan of FPSs, except Borderlands, but it would make me a little happy to hear that the newest COD isn't the best game ever.

I doubt we will ever evolve to that level, Madden is a massively sucessful franchise I can pick up 2004 or 2010 and seen little difference.
because it doesn't have any competition. Lack of competition = stagnation.
It also means (unfortunately) that there isn't really a better option, which shouldn't be a problem in the fps market

I know BattleField 3 will be better but I hope all the immature and annoying players stay in CoD. And if another CoD game DOES come out? I'm *****-slipping Activision for ruining yet another series.

I personally feel the BF3 is going to be the better game out of it and CoD coming out this year, but CoD will still keep its top place simply because people have played it before and go 'OMG CoD!'
If BF3 does take over, for me this would be a great satisfaction, and a great disappointment. The Satisfaction would come from having CoD dethroned, and having the better game take its place. That and the fact that one of the 'will sell well no matter what' games will have been bought down to your average game's level, which is IMHO where it belongs.
The Disappointment would be that the Battlefield community would become even more flooded with hackers and young gamers who find it acceptable to scream obsenities into the microphone who would have to come from the CoD fanbase if BF3 did hypothetically become more popular than CoD.
For the industry, this would hopefully encourage:
a) Developers to break the bounds of what we know games are, and come up with new ideas rather than copy CoD (Though they will likely just copy BF3)
b) Developers to develope for the PC first, then downscale the game for consoles rather then creating the game for consoles then adding stuff on top for PC (The BF3 team has stated that them doing this has improved the game for both PC and Console)

I doubt it will have much of an impact... Maybe, JUST MAYBE, will the CoD boys get their act together and start making decent stuff again, but I'm not willing to put any of my hard-earned money on it...

It'll mean that it'll be wicked! If Infinity are staying on for the next CoD installment and DICE keep improving on some fantastic work then it really will be a great year for present day FPS. If it's those two devs battling it out then it'll be interesting to see which one pulls out in front.

Of course, if the rumours of Infinity Ward having the Call of Duty franchise taken off them are true then it's high time to watch someone take down the Call of Duty franchise for good.

I'd really like DICE to be successful and all that, but the demographic for CoD games is not the kind that would appreciate the tactical and cooperative gameplay of Battlefield games. If Battlefield succeeds in overturning CoD's sales and popularity, then the multiplayer quality is going to suffer.

If DICE wants to break into the "mindless shoot-em-up war hero" demographic, they really shouldn't be using the Battlefield series.

Those aren't really rumors now. If I remember correctly, the two heads of IW left and soon half of the team followed suit. They're trying to get the CoD licence from Activision but I think ACtivision is just too stubborn to let it go.
