The title says it all.

What if Doctor Who had been an American-made show instead of a British one? What would've the Tardis been like? How would've famous episodes have turned out? What American actors would've been tapped to play the various incarnations The Doctor? You get the gist.

It would have a bigger budget, and thus better stars, and effects. However it would probably have been written by Joss Whedon, and thus would have sucked even more than it currently does. But the US keeps it alive, as they seem to love it, so being american would probably have not been anywhere near as popular.

Are we going along that it started in the US? Like back in the 60's or whatever?

Because if so, I can't really see all that much that would have changed.

I mean, Superman used to "change" in a telephone booth, so it's not Americans are unfamiliar with a booth of some sort

I think the doctor would be quite a different character. I feel the The "eccentric genius" is more of a British character trope than an American one. I sort of imagine an American doctor to be more flashy, brash and overtly heroic than the British one. Also, in the early "seasons" he would probably also have had a "token black guy" assistant!

And obviously, all filmed on a bigger budget- so more aliens, big fights, with lots of gunfire and explosions.

It would have been remade into a movie directed by J.J Abrams that totally missed the point of the original franchise.

Exactly. His TARDIS would be shaped like a phone booth. And, on average, his adventures would have been most excellent. But, occasionally, they would have been quite bogus.

I see what you did there.
I think it could have, potentially, been fairly similar to the original one. But with more action.

He would be John Who, the rustic and down-to-earth athlete. He'd be burlier and likely wear jeans and a t-shirt.

Every situation could be satisfyingly solved with his great big laser gun.

The Doctor would be constantly fighting socialist aliens & probably spending a lot more time in major American cities than London. He would also definitely have a gun rather than a screwdriver...all in all it wouldn't be as good.

Either this, or more of Bill And Ted. It's just more fun being from Britain.

I think in a sense it was. Quantum Leap is a time travel series in which a not-terribly unusual guy and his assistant try to right wrongs. And I think a US Doctor Who from the 60s and 70s would probably have been a bit like that - rather sentimental, with a clear moral at the end of each episode.

By the 80s it would have gone all A-team - bigger budget, more explosions and a sassy black companion from the hood who slightly overshadowed the old guy in the supposed main role.

In the 00s relaunch it would be written by JJ Abrams and have a very convoluted story arc that made no sense and felt like it was being made up on the spur of the moment. Pretty much like the UK version.

Effects, yes, but there's no reason the quality of the acting would have been better.

(For that matter, you could argue that letting writers know they'll be having expensive effects isn't always a good idea)

There would be a lot more gunfights with the Doctor capping people. Ohh, and more romantic tension... but with an eventual romantic payoff;see Chuck, Castle, Psych, Bourne Trilogy, anything American. As an American I don't think I would like it as much if it wasn't British. It's a breathe of fresh air compared to American tv.

There would've been more wisecracks and shooting, and less jelly babies and running.

And the Daleks would've been right out. I mean, honestly, who could take a salt shaker with a plunger stuck on seriously?

Eventual romantic payoff doesn't always mean it's who you think, though. I'm a fan of HIMYM, and even though the show did spoil Ted and Robin not getting together in the first freaking episode, I still hoped/thought that they might somehow make it happen later. Instead, we get a completely new character introduced in the last season who has played no role through the first quarter or so of the season.
