What if Obsidian picked up Mass Effect after ME3...

Sicne Obsidian often picks up franchises after Bioware is finished with them, would you be opposed to Obsidian making a Mass Effect game after the Reaper storyline is concluded in Mass Effect 3?

What do you think they could bring to the franchise?

I imagine they'd do what they always do.

Namely, create a conceptually interesting and reasonably well written story that is ruined by a laundry list of game-breaking bugs and unfinished content.

I would pick it up about 18 months later during a Steam sale, try to play it, then give up in disgust about 3 hours in.

No thank you. I love Obsidian, I do think that if only they'd get their act together they're capable of producing some of the best games in the industry, but they've also done enough follow-up work and I'd rather continue to see what they're capable of on their own rather that yet again picking up after another studio.

Also I'm one of those strange people who tend to prefer having a definitive ending to things. Let a series end on a high note rather than dragging it on to milk every last ounce of good faith left in the community or to see something that was once unique become 'just another ___'.

To be fair, there are a few games that didn't have this. Namely New Vegas and Mask of the Betrayer, but those instances are definitely the exception rather than the rule. There's also Dungeon Siege 3, but that game is about as generic as they come anyways.

OT: No, I'd rather not. Mass Effect needs to have some sort of closure after ME3 and I'd rather Obsidian stop working on pre-existing IP's and do something new anyways. Besides, one thing that I always liked about the Mass Effect games is that they're reasonably well polished, and with Obsidian, you can throw that idea right out the window.

No. KotOR II was buggy and unfinished. After that disgrace, I'm not inclined to give them another chance. They can keep their destructive hands to themselves.

What if... What if... I know what my reaction would be:

<youtube=7lfqZmPkbvM>

Only there would be more arm-flailing, dancing like a sissy and OMGOMGOMG.

I wouldn't give a rats ass if it was bugged up the ass, I'd still play it.

KoTOR2 was buggy and unfinished because Lucasarts gave them like a year to do it.

It's still the best thing to happen to the Star Wars franchise since The Empire Strikes back, and I found it a lot more fun, with way better playability value than KoTOR1.

I reckon if Obsidian did Mass Effect, we'd get something similar in tone to Babylon 5.

I love Obsidian but i'd prefer them do work on their new IPs or a sequel to Alpha Protocol if SEGA isn't still being a dick about it.

I suppose i've just lucked out with Obsidian games, absolutely none of them have bugged out on me. Sure there were Bark Scorpions lodged in this ground in F:NV but that's about it.

Maybe console versions are just all round more stable compared to PC? Or Obsidian makes terrible ports...

NWN2 never bugged out on me, neither did KoTOR2, sure KoTOR2 was unfinished but it never actually bugged out or died on me at any point in the game.

^ this, except I'd probably slog through it despite the bugs.

Kind of a moot point though, since Mass Effect is original Bioware IP (as opposed to KOTOR) and it's way too valuable for them to give up. Bioware do own it, not EA, right?

It'd certainly be interesting to see what they could come up with. The Mass Effect series is one of those funny stories where there are some really good, amazing parts but at the same time, there are other moments that are absolutely abysmal.

I wouldn't write Obsidian off, given enough time, support and QA testing I believe they could make a truely significant addition to the Mass Effect universe. But what I would absolutely love to see is Bioware and Obsidian working together on the project. That way, hopefully, we could get the best of both worlds.

Lucas arts cut their development cycle by ONE YEAR it isn't Obsidian's falt it was that ass hole George Lucas.
OT: No I love Obsidian but the Mass Effect series should end after me3.

Then the writing quality would skyrocket and Mass Effect would turn from awesome to truly amazing... but the games would be buggier than an ant hill.

While I never played the game, blaming them after the publisher cut their dev time in half seems unfair.

KOTOR 2 was bad because LucasArts made them make the game in a small timeframe so it could be out for Christmas, remember?

Also, if New Vegas and Alpha Protocol are anything to go by, it'd have some great dialog, and if they were given a current-generation engine, unlike for Fallout and KOTOR, it'd look great.

So my answer? It'd be pretty good, but I'd prefer to end on a high note next month. Unless Obsidian made their own sub story... Now that would rock.

Why is this a sandbox? Why do I have a dozen guns that I can't find ammo for? Why are there even more people asking me to do stuff than usual, why is Commander Shepard pick pocketing everyone? Why am I playing a Fallout 3 mod?

Obsidian makes good games but I think that they should stick to fallout and TES, they fill a niche that I like, but Bioware fills a niche that I like too, I'd rather not see the latter consumed for more of the former, variety is nice in my game library

This, word for word.

Obsidian shouldn't make games until they've figured how to make games that work as intended. Every time I hear about one of their games i'm always interested about the concept, but the moment I play the game I find myself wanting to do nothing more than turn the damn thing off. New vegas is an exception...but new vegas was basically just a large Fallout 3 mod.

Anway, Obsidian isn't owned by EA and Bioware is, so there is no chance whatsoever of EA handing off one of their best IP's to a non-EA company. Thank Zeus for that...

I'd scream to the heavens for around 3 minutes. I'd probably buy it and listen to all you complain about game breaking bugs and how this game is unplayable.
