This is just a sudden idea with no real thinking behind it but what if there was a game series that each game was a parody of, for example, the assassins creed series or the FPS genre or mass effect. Maybe even parodying indie games. There may be games like that out there (I know of duty calls) but I don't think there have been many games like that. Of course it would have to be a good, funny parody, other wise it would just be rubbish. This was just a random idea but what do you think of it?

It'd take some really funny people with solid game design talent.

It's possible, but it looks unlikely that someone would put the effort required to make it properly good, both as a parody and as a game.

There's Press Space to Win, [http://www.notdoppler.com/superpressspacetowinactionrpg2009.php] a short flash game made a few years ago making fun of the increasing linearity of RPGs and JRPGs. Not to mention the epic review of it:

Apart from that, as someone already mentioned, Saints Row is more or less parodying GTA. The Lego games are also built to parody, but they're more parodying their respective franchises than games themselves (Indiana Jones, Star Wars, etc).

The only game that I can think of that comes close (other than the above example) is Borderlands' references to some games in side quests. They've even brought up gaming community issues like 'fake gamers' and 'unrealistic female character outfits' that I found hilarious. It could work if done correctly.

And probably the gaming industry needs a satire or two thrown their way these days. Maybe it'll make them strive not to get put in those games.

Deadpool parodies quite a few games. Even if at times it's only through Deadpool's dialogue.
DLC quest parodies DLC's for games in general.
The Bard's Tale parodies rpg's.
Pyst apparently parodied Myst.

Well there are quite a few around or at least references to stuff, but it wouldn't hurt if someone picked up the torch and just went all out with a parody series, preferably doing small bites at a time with cartoon-ish characters so they can stretch their take on it further and don't overstay their welcome.

DLC Quest - exactly what it sounds like. You have a game, but you need to "buy" (with coins you collect) DLC to get stuff like jump, or go left. Then you have Upgrade Complete [http://armorgames.com/play/3955/upgrade-complete] where you need to buy better graphics, music, menus, etc, and sort of similar are the Achievement [http://armorgames.com/play/2893/achievement-unlocked] Unlocked [http://armorgames.com/play/6561/achievement-unlocked-2] series [http://armorgames.com/play/13196/achievement-unlocked-3].

There is Duty Calls [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbTtsezso4Q] which is a parody of Call of Duty.

There is Saints Row, as it was mentioned.

And there are a bunch of games that spoof traditional fantasy games, Magicka for example does its fare share of it.

Really, there are a lo-o-ot of parodies, to be honest.

You mean how like Duke Nukem was a parody of arena shooters during the 90s, Bulletstorm was a parody of more modern FPS games, DeathSpank was a parody of RPGs, and Saints Row was a parody of GTA and GTA clones? No, can't think of any.

I don't even know if it's intentional, but the Half-Minute Hero Series always feels to me like sort of a parody of JRPG Gameplay and Tropes.

Other than that, you could also call No more Heroes as a rather elaborate/confusing parody on otaku power fantasies. As for parodying games per se, the open world structure (of the first game, at least) is a bit of a mean joke against grindy/boring open world games that force side quests on you

So, you're looking for the Bobobo Bo-bobobo of video games? Yeah, quite a few of those already, though nowhere near as insane as that anime/manga.

Honestly I'd like to see more games parody themselves (or however you're supposed to say that) at some point in their dialogue or even gameplay. Though that should be something to add to the game, not just totally random (unless said game was already that random, but that's not easy to do without being just... bad).

Most examples named here are not really parodies, but straight examples played with a tongue in cheek writing.

Matt Hazard is a parody of many games, but it has the problem most parodies have, that is, pointing out shitty tropes is not good parody if you play them straight, it just makes you both shitty and unimaginative.
