What if there was a zombie game with no zombies?

Good idea, but SOME zombie encounters would be needed at least. But making those encounters DEADLY and frightening would be the key to making it fun. Have your only means of defense being a gun with only 6 bullets for an entire level, or a moment where you have to escape a group of zombies because you are weaponless and there is almost nowhere to hide. Make combat the hardest or worst option. Make your gun practically useless because of poor aiming, make your weapons do little to no damage with swings. The whole 'Survival' aspect and the suspense would make the game erie and fun at the same time. I think a single moment in a entire level could make it fun, even just wandering around a near pitch-black warehouse with shuffling and things nearby would be creepy, then have that SINGLE moment of sheer horror as a zombie bursts out from a crate or you turn on a light only to get a upclose and sudden corpse staring back into your face.

The idea is a start, and I'm sure if someone wanted to take the time to develope and work out the mechanics for such a game it'd work well. Of course I'm saying that combat isn't really needed, but at least having some way to visually project horror and a constant feeling of fear would be what would make the game work.

As you are alone for too long, sanity might start to slip, including hallucinations, such as glimpses of monsters, shades, shadows and sounds.
There would be an interesting twist. Going with the original idea; your party members get occasionally dragged off and disappear, various other nasties happen, but the only enemies you actually see, you discover at the end are mere hallucinations.

Heck, a weaponized hallucinagen (no idea how it's spelled) may even be the cause of the whole disaster.

I like the ideas people are coming up with. I wish I was better with any form of game disign or I would be working on this game now. Everyone has great suggestions and I think that The best canidate for this work is Frictional games. If anyone from the company can see this make it now. Call it like Survival or something just make it happen.

Reminds me of the movie Signs. Say what you will about M Night Shyamalan's later movies, but Signs was pretty decent (save for the water thing).

Anyways, in the earlier parts of the movie he built so much tension and atmosphere without any real interaction with the Aliens. He built up to it... Movement in the grass, a silhouette at night - did you see it or was it your eyes playing a trick on you? A leg or an arm here and there... Catching a glimpse of it in a reflection or just its hand reaching out at you. Then you see it for the first time in full, on the news, caught on camera for a split second as it walks by...

I mean, I was kept on the edge of my seat the whole movie, never knowing when something would pop out and never knowing exactly what it would be. If a game could do the same, then.... awesome.

I don't think you could actually call it a zombie game if there are no actual zombies in it. Those moans could be really really drunk werewolfs for all we know.

Is everyone forgetting that they actually have monsters in A:DD? Sparse as they are there are still monsters.
just to clarify, yes. I mentioned it in the 8th post.

OT: Coming back to this thread today has amused me. Some genuinely good ideas have emerged alongside some diabolically retarded comments. Good stuff, Escapist. Good stuff. = D
