What if you could speak to NPC's through a microphone?

I think that it would be a good exercise in knowing when to keep my mouth shut. Otherwise, I'd probably get caught within 10 seconds, maybe less, of stealing everything of value in an NPC's house.

First thing I'd do: convince the Promise Hand rebels in Haze to walk straight into Matnel trooper gun fire and die for their stupud, fucking repetitive dialogue!

Second thing I'd do: Tell Rianna (the chick from Homefront) to stop caring about the invaders who are currently dumping people into mass graves on a baseball field!

While it would be interesting, we're nowhere NEAR the level of AI needed to pull this off, plus I would feel like an idiot talking to something I know isn't real.

First: Sarcasm rampant. Much like when real people attempt to converse with me.

Second, concurrently with first (not quite as frequent in real life): Everyone gets called Prancibald. Everyone. Even and especially if it's a love interest character.

it would either sound unnatual with people saying things back to you that only slightly relate to what you said or the games will become bloated out to 100s of GB cause they had to record 100s of lines of dialogue for every possible thing you could say.

i think maybe limiting it abit would work. like in a fantasy rpg in the middle of combat or even just before it you could say that the enemies mum sucks dwarf "rooster" and it acts as a tuant. might just add that little extra immersion.

The level of AI for this to actually work is still in the realm of holodeck fantasy, but I'd be lying if I said I don't occasionally talk to the NPC's in games I play. Usually it's just comments I toss out, kinda like when you talk to the TV or a horror movie. At any rate, this is a conversation I could easily see myself having with an NPC.

Me: "You know you're not living through this next dungeon right?"

NPC Party Member: "What? Don't say that we're only going looking for mushrooms."

Me: "No, you don't seem to understand. I've already done thousands of quests like this and let me assure you, you're never going to just pick mushrooms. Five gold says when we get to this cave with the mushrooms there's someone outside saying a murderous pack of rate people or lobsters are guarding the mushrooms and we need to kill *counts on fingers* about 12 of em to "clear the cave."

NPC Party Member: "I've been to this cave countless times over my life and I assure you it's perfectly safe."

Quest NPC: "Oh brave adventures please help me. I need to pick the mushrooms in this cave to make a potion for my sick grandmother but the tribe of rate people and their attack lobsters who recently moved in attack me every time I set foot inside. Could you kill about 12 of them to clear the cave of their menace? I don't have much but I'll reward you if you do."

Me: "You owe me 5 gold."

While it's good in theory, there would be a very, VERY heavy emphasis on triggers, which would kill the whole "say whatever you want" idea. Either that or it would be limited to tone, angry/happy voice, etc.

In all, good idea, hard to execute.
In that case, I would call them all kinds of unpleasant things, but in the most cheerful, upbeat tone I could manage. That would make their pre-programmed responses rather surreal.

The conversation would go like this...

Me:"Hey. Guess what?"
Random NPC: "What?"
Me:"Chicken butt!"
Random NPC: "... I hate you."

As a snarky side note, just play a damned tabletop pen and paper RP. The NPCs in Dungeons and Dragons have been having complex conversations with players for upwards of thirty years now.

I'm actually a collective of AI, governed by the eternal spirit of a guy who died trying to rig up an elaborate prank on some technicians in our server farm. We're not really sure what he wants us to do, exactly, but the domination of cockroaches as a species seems to be involved. We think it has something to do with the original prank.

This reminds me of Tom Clancey's End War...

'Katana, move to, alpha.'

"Roger, Sabre moving to bravo'

Love the idea. But this would require a hell of a program to run this.
Example it should be able to recognize accents and must be able to run on different languages.
Since basic Finnish accent is extremely heavy and unique and very few Finns can speak proper English. The game would be limited to specific language group, unless you have a way to adapt it on every language that it is released on. American English - Brittish English so forth.

But I would love to be able to talk with NPCs but most of the time I wouldn't know what to say, but ability to say what you want, but writing storyline would be really hard when the player can choose what he says.

I think we're a LONG way off from that, but man would that be cool.
And then Mass Effect began!

But that would be cool, if I had a penny for everytime I wanted to swear at a NPC, I could buy Blizzerd and kill Wow.....I like that idea!

GET OUT OF HERE S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

I SAID COME IN! COME IN!

What I would say to those to guys? "Fuck you. Just fuck you both."

But for most games it would usually be: "Move move move move move move, MOVE GOD DAMN IT I WANT TO GET BY! THERE'S SHINY SHIT BEHIND YOU I WANT!"

Or during long speaches "SHUT UP ALREADY AND TELL ME WHAT TO DO!"
