*Company releases tech demo for new graphics engine*
"OMG y arent dey makin da gaem I want!!1!"
Square Enix has some of the neediest fans...
You said the problem yourself:
"Graphics Engine."
Square has been showing for well over 10 years that they believe that graphics are king. Plot, characters, even gameplay, they all take a backseat to things looking as flashy as they can humanly make it. "What? This summon animation is over 30 seconds and totally disrupts the flow of battle? WHO CARES, IT LOOKS FAAAAABULOOOOUS, no one will EVER want to skip it after the 40th HOUR of gametime they wasted by casting that thing!"
It's not about "making the games I want." I gave up on that, long ago. Their games are always either hit and miss (XIII TRIED to have actual character devellopment for someone besides the one postergirl protagonist but the gameplay was unbearable, while X-2 and XII had the best battle systems in the series while everything else was so atrocious that I had no motivation to see the story through.) Or total miss (Let's be honest, here. Between the plot holes, bland characters, and terrible battle balance, as well as the difficulty of navigating the pre-rendered backgrounds, a certain well loved title is easily heading my "worst JRPGs of all time" list....)
So no. I'm not just being an entitled fan saying "give me the game I want." I'm being a gamer taking a legitimate stand and saying "If you want to make movies, don't call it a goddamn game. And if you want to make a game, try using the graphics as an afterthought instead of the main selling point. Gameplay, story, etc, none of it should have to suffer because you blow the entire budget on the graphics, but it always happens."
I stopped being a Square fan somewhere in the neighborhood of... 7 years ago? But that doesn't mean I don't want to see them learn from their mistakes and start making good games again. I would very much like to like their games, but if they keep pulling BS like that, it's not likely.
