TimeSplitters: Zombie beheader

Battlefield 2: Hate anyone who uses it because I can't

Team Fortress 2: Without it this game would suck, especially if you include the sawn-off the scout has

Half-Life 2: A Zombie killer again

Counter-Strike: Worthless

Doom: Where would I be without it?

More games I can't think of have it, lots of them...

All in all my favorite gun in a game, unless there happens to be a revolver in that game... or a revolver that fires shotgun shells. (looking at you Borderlands)

The shotgun is an old favorite of mine, but that may be because of my old obsession with Resident Evil. It's great in sci-fi games where the obligatory close quarters monsster/mutant/demon/zombie horde is coming at you from all sides, and extremely useful in multiplayer, so long as you have a long range weapon to compensate its lack of range. The shotgun is a fun weapon to use, and to anyone who says it's cheap: a weapon is only cheap if it kills you, isn't it?

Its defiantly NOT worthless. It has its uses...

Can be used to great effect on Aztec or Cobble. Basically anywhere where the camp points are close to the choke points...

The pump action has a surprisingly long range in fact.

I will agree the auto is pointless though...

In games such as Counter-Strike, you'd be surprised how useful the shotgun can be when you're sneaking around. Yes, you read that right. If you get the drop on an enemy, what better way to announce your presence than with two barrels, right through the back of their skull?

In a Resident Evil game its my primary weapon. In Bioshock it was a pretty useful device too. I find its very much a game-specific thing, when faced with a fairly soft target its the only real option. I don't get any real attatchment to the thing though.

Except for one, the sawn-off shotgun in Max Payne. I only changed from that thing for 2 reasons, I was either out of ammo or needed the sniper rifle.

Depends on the game, but games that get it right (phenomenal accuracy and damage at close range, good accuracy and so-so damage at medium and hit-or-miss at long) are my favorites. Because I love a good shotgun. It's a nice weapon of last resort.

anybody remember Mafia? Now that is one great implementation of both sawn off shotgun and the regular one... best part: wasting a bunch of gangsters in a river of blood - sicilian style

EDIT: And to answer REDPILL's shotgun question. The best shotgun ever (If people want to count it as such) ...

Unreal's FLAK CANNON!
I count it as such. I love the flak cannon from the original UT. 2004's grenade part is nerfed.

It is a great weapon with a rather redundant name.

And I feel sad that even though we're in the year 2007, I have yet to see a game that makes one's bowels get shot off or half the face blown away when hit by a close-range shotgun round.

Yeah I will agree with you on the pump action, the bots will kill me all the way across the map with it. But the auto is horrible. No range and seems to me like no damage either. Then again I never use it, I just kill the ones who try to.

I really, really like shotguns. But I reckon that games should have more single-shot Ol' Betsy type of shotguns, kinda like hunting rifles than the usual owerpowerful SPAS-12 that has to feature in every game that I play. It's like a bad guest star in a sit-com. It's famous for a reason, it's just that you don't like the reason, and come up with the conclusion that it doesn't deserve to be in the game. Or sit-com.
