In Resident Evil 4, I back up when someone tries to grab me, then I slice them in the face with my knife.

Forget to build units in RTS games is my most common tactic. They will fear the maxed tech trees and nothing else!

Either that or circle strafe. If all else fails circle strafe.
Haha you must do the same thing as me, get your economy and technology going then get destroyed when the enemy comes.

I love using stealth for any game that uses it.

Also, retreating is a TACTICAL decision. It's how you live longer in TF2.

Science tech/aka. Build best gun technology. Also, spam industry at same time, if possible.

Then spam badass hi-tech tanks against spear-chucking fools.

The 'The quicker you burn tech, the quicker they actually burn' method.

In FPS games, I advance very, very slowly. And try to line up as many headshots as I can, but slowly. Then I slowly get out of cover, slowly reload, and slowly walk to the next knee-high wall. Then I crouch. Slowly.

Well, I play mostly FPS so I have a variety of tactics, all of which I use if the moods hits me or if I run into a particular situation.

In order from most used to least used
1) Blitzkrieg/Shock And Awe[some]- Lots of big pretty explosions followed by hitting them as hard as I can. Hopefully my team will charge the breach with me while the enemy is still trying to figure out what's happening
2) Ninja - Hide out behind enemy lines and stab and shoot the crap out of them. Try and get them to spend as much resources as possible to try and get me. The more guys spent looking for me, the fewer guys shooting at my teammates.
3) Bait and Switch - Cause a big ruckus in one area and hit them in the opposite direction. Or send in a small group to play ninja
4) Support - Help out my teammates in anyway possible. Repair their vehicles, heal them, revive them, rearm them, and let them spawn on me.

I tend to have a similar character build in all RPGs: a charismatic guy who can talk his way into/out of anything and is really good with long distance kills. Together, it lets me control almost any situation. (Fallout 3 is the major game I'm thinking of; being a Sentinel with a sniper rifle in ME2 is another one)

Back in the days of Red Alert 2 i would usually play allies or soviets and just tech up as fast as possible while also relying on super weapons to wipe out resistance while my forces move in, the same mostly on Red Alert 3 although Soviet V4's and support powers render defenses useless, C&C 4 i always play defense class to bide my time until i can build an ion cannon or nuke both of which are really useless and i still don't know why i continue to use them and finally Starcraft 2 i play as Protoss (used to play Terran when i figured how easy that faction was to play) and usually 4 gate my enemies to death and if that doesn't work it's either DT's or Voidrays.

I don't play it much now, but back in my Warcraft 3 days I'd hire a dark ranger as my main hero. Black arrows gives you skeletons you can use to scout and harass, silence is useful versus enemy heroes, and life drain increases her survivability. Never saw why more people didn't use 'em.

Plus, post level 6 you can use charm to try and swipe a peasant to build enemy buildings and units, though the game is usually drawing to a close by that point.

Uh...winning? No seriously, I tend to employ as much distraction and as much flanking as possible.

In strategy games..

If I'm in a good mood extreme micromanagement, multi pronged attacks, misleading skirmishes, and usually go for armies consisting of large amounts of expensive powerful units with a little fodder here and there. I usually work closely with allies, if I have one. If I do I'll usually choose units and roles to work well with their set up. I also enjoy small commando style raids on targets of opportunity.

In a FPS..

I usually try to ensure I have the upper hand such as being in strange places or ensuring I'll see them first before directly engaging. Unless I know I am sufficiently more skilled than my target so it's not a resource (health ammo, powerup etc) expensive encounter.

In general, patience and practice to be at my best. I am usually annoyed when I lose if I wasn't at a disadvantage in some fashion.

In Alpha Protocol (a spy game not unlike Deus Ex in accomodation of varying playstyle and omniscience of development team), I favor the headshot/sneaking route, but I always go for an assault rifle on the side in case s**t breaks loose. Failing that, I <3 the sound generator, explosive grenades (not the mines, because I can never figure out how to plant those) and incendiaries, because it's almost cathartic to hear the screams.

FPS: I tend to use guns that are good in real life rather than what's the best in the game. Never works out...

RTS: Well, basically this

Oh, I also tend to build up massive defensive forces around the enemy base and just wait it out rather than attacking headlong. Barring that, I get my arty as close as possible and just bomb them back to the stone age.

Oh, and in games like Men of War I always go for the elite commando units and snipers rather than tanks. Also why I never win any matches...

RPG: I tend to take things nice and slow, and 100% it on my first try. Doesn't seem to be pretty common among my friends...

I always target stragglers who aren't close enough to one of their allies to allert them of my presence, start with my most powerful ranged attack, then a low-powered fast autoshoot, taking the enemy's health down 50%, then when the sucker gets close enough, I either switch to mele or use my most powerful close-range attack. End result is that I rarely need potions (especially when the game slowly heals you when you just stand or run around).

Sc2 I use mass infantry and Thors. My strategy is basically that of the Imperial Guard of Warhammer 40K. To send waves of troops supported by heavy units. Aswell as to tech my Thors to the max and provided I remember infantry. I've made many armies flee before the terror Thors bring. And they can crush any army other than a big ass Protoss fleet.

In an FPS, I like to flank the enemy; be in a spot that I should not be able to be in, faster than they think possible.
Its hilarious to be standing behind an enemy's claymore, throwing knife in hand, standing over him, waiting for him to turn around.

In an RTS, I like to use my patented lure and nuke strategy, especially in SC1.
As protoss, you get a handful of Zealots to run into an enemy's base, kill something, then run out with the enemy hot on their heals. When playing against computers, you need some ranged units to keep them chasing you, so I have a couple dragoons waiting halfway between my zealots (runners) and reavers (nuke). Zealots run to the reavers without stopping, and the dragoons step up and hit the enemy a couple times. Then they run back as well, and my 5 reavers decimate whatever the enemy is chasing me with.
Against players, I'll modify this a bit by having the runners right straight out of their base, and the nukers meeting halfway (just imagine a T, where the bottom line is the nukers intercepting the chasers)

In an RPG, I like to have 3 unit types: Tank, Magic, I Kill You.
Tank is the guy with most defence and health, who will survive just about anything, and does pretty decent damage.
Magic is the guy/girl who does a ridiculous amount of damage to multiple targets, heals very well, or will assuredly kill 1 unit each turn.
I Kill You is the guy/girl who picks a target, and kills it. Usually in one turn, but sometimes in several turns (depending on health).
Every RPG I play has this kind of set up, modified a bit depending on party members and talent tree, but it has never failed me.

Flanking works in RTS' as well, but not as well as it does in FPS where the player can only look 1 direction at a time. Although it is hilarious to see an enemy try and run away, then get shelled by sieged tanks, or meet my invading force at his front door as reavers drop into his manufacturing core.

Well, in online shooters, I like to divert away from everyone and sneak behind the enemy lines and flank/sabotage them. Also good for sniffing out campers in a safer way.

Also, in MW2...I use Stinger Missles to take out enemy aircraft. Yes...it is something I do that few others do, and thats a terrible...terrible...truth.

In Age of Empires (and the various sequels), I would build a wonder in the middle of the map and watch everyone send the majority of their armies to destroy it. Once it's destroyed, they keep fighting each other while I attack their cities that are now practically undefended.
Also fun is seeing how long you can defend said wonder from destruction.
