Summer is here, and I need a job. The trouble is, I don't particulary like working and jobs are few and far between round here. I need inspiration/guidance...

What is the best/worst/most bizarre job you've ever had?

If you don't like working find somewhere casual and relaxed. I work in a retail store that's busy for maybe an hour or two a day. The rest of the time I spend talking to the other guys that work there and it's not too bad. One of the better places I've worked.

Worked as a deckhand on a charter boat before. That was pretty fun but you have to be nice and charasmatic to patrons plus its hard work.

I work evening and nightshifts as a gatekeeper/guard at a medical factory. I spend most of the time at work watching tv/dvds and browsing the internet. It's awesome
Dunno if you can get such a job only for the sumemr though.

Otherwise just get whatever you can get if jobs are few as you say. Even if it sucks just think of it as money you need.

Being a mailman is awesome. No boss you have to deal with (as long as you don't screw up), it's a very flexible job since you have to deliver the mail somewhere between 10 am and 5 pm or so (where I live that is), you can do it on your own pace, and you can work outside.

You can work in the Operation Room of many clinics.
Either as a "jumper" (a guy who opens and hands sterile instruments to the operating team, being non-sterile himself) or as a "hook-holder" (needs some upper-body strength).
Both are quite interesting.

I have only gotten one job and that is at one of my university's dining courts. I am hoping to get a job at a bookstore which is a very relaxed job.

careful, I hear some mailmen are getting attacked by wild turkeys.

I am going to be a support person in a month. Its basicly just taking someone with special needs (retards for the politcly incorrect) out once a week. They pay is good, you can choose when to work (just arrange it with the guy you are supporting), i get extra money for activities each month (for cinema and such) and it looks awesome on your CV. And they always need people to this kind of stuff, so it should be easy getting a job like this. Plus, some chicks thinks its awesome that you 'care' and are nice to people who looks funny.

Dont know how it might be where you are, but in Norway its an awesome job. You probably need to be over eighteen and have a clean criminal record though.

Part of the unskilled work force that nearly only employs the people from your year at sixth form.

God bless you Co-operative. It is like a form of school with no homework, in which I get paid...Call me small minded, I love it.

Been trying to get a job since I was 14, and still nothing.
This. I'm now 18 and at university and I still can't get anything.

Overall, it's up to you, OP. Do whatever you feel happy doing. I personally want to work part time around my studies in either a game store or a bookstore, since both are pretty laid back and deal with things I'm not only interested in but also know quite a lot about. As for an actual career, I want to go into game development. For that purpose I intend to teach myself a programming language this summer and also have Game Maker installed on my laptop to try and build up a portfolio of small, good games within the next two or three years...

Worst: Factory worker, mainly stacking newspapers, sorting, boxing, and wraping horrible work, horrible colleagues pay was good but the hours were shite. Never doing that again my claustrophobia was all over the place and the on the job training was about 5 minutes long had to teach myself to use the apperatus since the supervisors were so incompotent.

Best: Customer support, went well, pay was meh but I liked the atmosphere and the people I was working with. Until the manager switched with some twat who was hovering over us like a damned hawk well excuse me for taking an extra minute in the loo you bloody tool.

Kitchen porter was also shite, dont aim high just work get your wage and your meal at the end of the day will taste better cant ask for more in life really.

lolwut? How? In my uni's clinics only interns or qualified personel are allowed to hold the hooks. You want to tell me they let random people into an OR in Germany?
Not randomly, no. To hold the hooks, you need some kind of background like studying medicine/wanting to study medicine/become an OR-nurse or anything in that field.
But for the "jumper"-job, you have to apply as normal and are then specifically trained for it. Anybody can do it.
I know because while I was there doing my nursing service internship (yeah, we have that as a prerequisite for medicine, too, but I already finished mine and did part of it in the OR), I met a guy who was waiting for his next semester to begin and used the time to earn a little extra cash.
He specifically did night shifts - more money, less work.

Dish washer in a restaurant was shite. Boring as hell and the work was menial at best. The colleagues weren't too bad, but overall it felt like slavery.

Working in the harbour was better. It was quite heavy work at times, so you need a bit of muscle and stamina. Plus it wasn't without danger, with tons of cargo dangling above you things could go wrong. Colleagues were quite nice in fact, sure there were some tough guys, but if you get to know them and aren't too inept socially, they are pretty good people. The pay was quite good too. I had some days where I made some insane hours (22 was my record I think), and for 10 EUR per hour that is not bad for a student.

Still, I'm glad I'm almost finished with my studies and will do some intelligent stuff soon.

If there are any QA division or game studios around you, they often have part time contracts for QA Testers, since it's the development rush for christmas games. It's an awesome job, but you may have to do loads of hours.

You can also apply in parks as the guy walking around and making sure people aren't getting wasted. I've done that too and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

However, I think it is a must in life to get at least one awful job, just to be able to appreciate it once you get a good one.

BTW, to those who complain they tried to get a job but didn't, well, it's simple, you are not trying hard enough and that's that. ANYONE can get a job.

Worst: Temped in a factory making plastic crap (dinner trays, buckets, washing-up bowls etc]. Had to skim the excess plastic off the products when they were fresh (hot) from the machine. Each time you turn a bucket over, you get a massive hit of hot plastic fumes. After 30 mins I felt I'd smoked a pack of 20! Only 2 of the 7 temps planned to stick it out another day.

Best: Care Support Worker...

What he said. :)

Weirdest: Making honeycomb in an icecream factory.

I like the sounds of a job in security... I'm good at doing fuck all!!
