The english language confuses me some times. This site, for example: The escapist magazine. What IS that?

I tortured my brain withing an inch of it's life (which is pretty scary, if you think about it), and I still haven't figured it out

Here's what I think that it's not:

1) A convict / prisoner breaking out of prison. He/she is by definition an escapee.
So that can't be it.

2) A person who let him/herself be entertained/occupied by something/someone to escape the horrors of the real world. AKA= Escape from reality.

3) A follower of the newly formed Cult "Sons of Escapama". Which closely follows the teachings of one Jonathan "Iznogood" Escapama. Main teachings dictates that Escapama is the long lost great-great-grandson of Darth Vader and therefore can choke you to death with his brain if you in any way deviate from his word of teaching.

Any thoughts on this? Or, if you can, give me a plausible explanation on what "The Escapist" means. Much appriciated!

Escapist: Someone who wants to escape; especially from reality; Intended for or tending toward escape; especially, used to avoid, deny, or forget about reality, as through fantasy.
(Taken from wiktionary)

The Escapist is an online magazine based on gaming, and gamers out there play for many reasons, one of the main ones being to escape the harshness of the real world.

That is what they mean.

The second one sounds most like us.

Although number three is enticing to say the least.

I find it funny though that as "Escapists," we all seem very in tune with the world around us anyways, even outside of gaming.

Actually I'm pretty sure it's number three. Jonathan Escapama was the one who brought me to this site. And now, at last, I SEE THE LIGHT!!!

... And it's beautiful *sobs a little bit*

An Escapist is a person who avoids reality. I am an escapist.

*Glorious light fill the forum as great sparkling halos with "4"'s behind them appear. *

Ok, we've answered the first question.

Now here's one for you.

What qualities do Escapists have? What makes the fine people of this site the very fine people that they are? You and I are all Escapists together:

So, What is an Escapist?

I think of "The Escapist" as a bit tongue-in-cheek. "Escapism" comes up with every entertainment medium, but the content of the articles here is usually interested in something other than "escapism" as it's conventionally defined.
