Hello all, I would like to know what the PvP of Guild Wars 2 is like, specifically, how good is the implementation of balancing characters of different levels, and is WvW any good?

Also how does it compare to the PvP of the original Guild Wars? (which I was an avid player of untill my account got hacked)

Thanks a lot.

I haven't played it myself, but I have yet to hear anything bad about it. ArenaNet wants to make GW2's pvp a big e-sport, though, so that should tell you how focused they are on keeping it good.

Maybe one day when I'm higher I'll try it, or if my guild wants to do WvWvW.

I can go ahead and answer this:

The Profession balance in Guild Wars is... unbelievably good. With each class being highly flexible in the ways they can play, each class has the ability to stand out and stand out strongly.

World vs World is popular, but in a bit of chaos right now. Arenanet is going through day long matches in contrast to their planned 2 week matches in an effort to sort out balancing between the servers initially and figure out where the standing will be once they start the 2 week matches.

Aside from that WvW is open world PvP, with ongoing battles eveywhere. There are HUGE queues waiting to get into the most popular battle zones and set tactics for fighting haven't really surfaced yet because there are sooo many people that it's pretty much a zerg rush at every major battle front.

Structured PvP (sPVP)is where Anet is mentioning E-sports and it's quite capable. The classes are so flexible that multiple roles can be created for them, and the format is very similar to today's MOBA's, except no turret/capture point. Though, if they wanted to, they could EASILY design a map to fit the classic format.

It is still early on for people to really sort out all the fine details of it. But I never enjoyed the open world PvP in other games, yet I'm very much in love with the World v World and structured PvP in Guild Wars 2.

I was a skeptic, now I'm a fan.

Screw GW2 after what Ncsoft did to COH and team Paragon I'll never buy another NC Soft game again.

Haven't done the structured PvP since beta, but when I first tried it the combat was good, I guess I have to get better at it though. It could do with some more modes though (a simple capture the flag mode would be nice).

WvWvW though...

It's really good.

The only problem I guess would be fidnding out what to do when you start, but being scaled up to level 80 is good enough for me, I feel like I am contributing, even in a fight. Even if you can't fight well, there are other things you can do, likeusing suply to craft siege weapons or repairing structures.

The only thing I don't like about WvW is the lack of clear leaders. Sure, you get guys who know what they are talking about in the chat, but theres always those 50 guys who don't even read what goes on there. I'd be very grateful if they patched something in - say, 10 guys from your world are chosen every hour (those with high PvP rankings, successful guilds, etc.) These people then have the power to ping on the map, what they write in the chat is bolded or otherwise more prominent than the rest, you can see where I am going with this.
There actually is a commander system in WvW, you buy a manual for 100g and then you appear on the map always. I do not know if it gives you additional benefits but I assume it would. Give it time and the bigger guilds will be nominating commanders soon enough.

WvW is laggy as fuck. Keep your settings on low if you're doing it.
Haven't tried standard PvP. More of a PvE guy myself.

In all fairness there is speculation that this is an engine licensing issue. When NCSoft assumed control of CoH back in November of 2007, they had to license the technology, the rights of which lie with PWE, who run Champions Online. November 2012 would appear to be the end date for a 5 year licensing agreement. Champions Online and CoH are direct competitors. I'm sure you can fill in the rest.

Not that NCSoft aren't completely evil, but their hands may be tied on this one.

well looks like i'm gonna be the one with the unpopular opinion here, but honestly i didn't like it. i haven't tried WvW yet, only structured pvp, but i just found it a chaotic mess. all it did was made me miss my days of playing WOW in pvp.

however saying that, i have found that the classes all seem very balanced, i just don't like the general feel of it.

You can PVP any time in gw 2. The game automatically levels you to 80 gives you every weapon, pet, and stat point. At this point the only realdifferences are skill and trait build. If you enjoy mmo style pvp, the game types are similar. The huge difference is the lack of unkillable characters running around. Every class can heal, every class can dps. The developers put a lot of thought into making this game skill based, unlike wow or swtor. I was highly sceptic bout this game, but after playing it seems just what I was waiting for. The game is fun.

World versus world is chaotic as any battle should be. The real differnce here is a Zerg is not gonna bring down the walls of anything. They will get slaughter by the first moderately sized group using any kind of tactics or fortification. The people complaining don't realize this.

I'm not really a PvPer, but I do make a point to try it out at least once in any MMO, usually to my chagrin.

I tried one structured PvP which was completely addictive and crazy fun: Keg Brawl. I don't know if there are other structured matches, and I don't care. I would buy Keg Brawl as a standalone game.

I also tried WvW. It was actually surprisingly fun, if, as others have said, not very strategic. The entire point is the Zerg rush. This actually is good, IMO, in that it does away with a lot of the douchebag things people like to do in PvP games (griefing, picking out one player to repeatedly farm, etc...). The big downside is a decision that really makes very little sense to me: dying in PvP still damages your armor. I played it for about a half hour and ended up having to spend half a gold in repairs.

I might have tried getting deeper into it, but it was just too damn expensive...

WvW is chaotic, but also a shit ton of fun. I'm not generally a PvP person, but WvW has sucked up hours of my time. I would recommend joining a fairly large guild on teamspeak or vent, however. Otherwise it's not anywhere near as fun.

As I said though, I don't generally do PvP and haven't tried the sPvP. I don't fancy the idea of doing it with random people, and no one in my guild is particularly interested in doing it.

But really, WvW is fantastic, especially in a group. When a team of 30 people who are all working together on teamspeak captures a fort on their own, it feels awesome :D. Although, they still haven't quite matched up the servers yet, so my server is getting stomped into the dirt right now. WvW is a lot less fun when you can't do anything without getting owned. There was one day where the teams were really even, and it was awesome. Eventually it'll be like that, but for the moment it's imbalanced towards one server 90% of the time.

Yeah this is pretty BS, they need to remove it quickly. It's just stupid how easily it breaks. Maybe if armor took a bit longer to break, but atm it's just a money sink. I will say though, you get A LOT of exp doing it. Gained 2 whole levels doing my daily in WvWvW from level 73 to 75.

I'd assume it's pretty good considering GW1 main selling point was PvP.
I'll probably jump into sPvP later, but don't do WvW until you're at least level 60, you don't get level 80 equipment, a.k.a. you'll get raped hard.
Except right now the majority of people aren't lv80 in WvW, and personal level has little to do with success in a battle of this size. Attacking at the right time and in the right place are far more important than what level you are.

The only wait I would suggest is that you make sure you have all your skill slots unlocked before joining.

Screw the XP, I'd rather have the gold to pay for the stupid repairs...

Just like that damn super Fire Elemental in the Asura noob zone. 15 silver in Rez and Repair costs for 2.5s worth of vendor trash blues after a 90-minute one-shot fest.

What are "things I'm never going to bother doing in GW2" for 400, Alex?

It's fun and fast and I love the fact you don't have to re queue for every fight.

I need a tournie team now though.

Oh and I love the fact someone can't beat you just on having better gear, that's awesome.

The Q for wvwvw on my server is INSANE though.

Got level 80 a couple of days ago.
