Not sure about the oil thing, but I can enlighten you on Russia. Russia is having a nationalist ressurgeance, basically they want to be one of the "big kids in the park" again so they're trying to rebuild some of their influence by "liberating" Southern Ostia from the Georgians under a pretext of ethnic defense.

Try reading up on the whole story before bashing Russia. South Ossetia is supposed to be a neutral zone, kept safe by both Russian and Georgian troops. Georgia attack Ossetia because they are trying to expand and become a part of NATO. Russia retaliated because many South Ossetians still consider themselves Russian citizens and Russia is uncomfortable with the western powers taking land so close to their borders. Russia is not invading South Ossetia, they are invading Georgia in reaction to the Georgian's attack. Apparently Georgia is an ally of the western powers though so there is a strong anti-Russian spin put on a lot of the media coverage.

Crap like this happens all the time, the late 90's were an exception really. Economic markets fluctuate up and down, wars go on, being 13 you proably haven't seen much of the long picture yet.

Countries are kept in power through obtaining as much resources (oil, land, argiculture, etc) and money that they can. These resources are then used to create political, military, and economic leverage in order to proccur more resources.

That's just how it works and all the "justice, freedom, and democracy" crap is really just a surface level Public Relations layer designed to appeal to people who have no understanding of the more complicated resource hordeing game.

Russians are being Russians, Americans are being Americans and Gas prices going up are welcomed by the American government since they are aiming to reduce their carbon footprint. Its all nothing to worry about for you really, this sort of stuff happens every day, sadly.

Didn't mean to come across as one sided and I've heard the Georgians have been cut a little too much slack in this whole debacle.

well I like metaphors so let's give it a go the oil is running out now oil can be represented by time, and the day we run out of all fossil fuels will be a big exam the next day. now are we studying for this big test? E.G stopping the reliance on oil hydrogen that whole shibang. no we're watching The Simpsons in stead and having that tick in our stomachs that we should be doing something productive instead but we really can't be bothered and we may be able to just wing it. except if we fail this exam humanity is plunged into darkness and constant waring over remaining oil, medical supplies and general amenities over a period of I'd say 50 years will destroy most of humanity and the remnants of the human race will struggle survive as nomadic tribes walking about a post apocalyptic world trying to use skills to stay alive that no one knows because they were made obsolete about 300 years ago.

needless to say because of this the world leaders are under a bit of pressure at the moment so they've all gone a bit crackers. (get a job as a political commentator? I think so)

Well first off, they lost badly. Secondly, they aren't the big bad Ruskies. You really couldn't hope for accurate reporting when they can spin it as a classic David vs. Goliath tale with our old enemies as the giant.

Exactly. Sorry I came off as a jerk, I'm just sick of hearing the same thing from everyone I work with.

Correct. Gold star.

I've not met one person who hasn't beaten the "RUSSIA R BAD" drum over and over again, without fucking looking into it.
