Graphic Realism with tons of dirt and grey and brown and green.
and so much cussing it puts the navy to shame.

Or at least, that's what the industry thinks is important.

Might as well not even say what i think as they have their answer in $$$$$$ in their accounts.

1)Am I having fun?

2)Are the graphic pleasant? (They don't need to be state-of-the-art or even 3D. All I ask is that the scenery have more effort than Holic.

3)Is it nonfrustrating? (The sudden difficulty curve in Psychonaughts & the frustration at failing this one boss fight ad nausium...I thought I was going to have an anxiety attack).

4)Does it have the certain something? (Mostly refuring to a sence of humor or eerie macabre). I think about this when I wonder why I loved Baldur's Gate while Icewind Dale bored the snot out of me.

Foremost to me is immersion, a game that'll literally suck you into another world. Also it has to be fun, an enjoyable set of tasks/challenges/missions that aren't either chores or seemingly pointless in the grander scheme of things.
Plus a storyline that'll break the rules every so often and surprise me with a twist of fortune and/or events, that's always a welcome relief, yet seemingly rare as of late.

Aspects such as graphics and multiplayer options are just a bonus in my book, although both can enhance an already decent game

I was playing Just Cause 2 today and thought to myself.. "I really do prefer games with great graphics such as these." So my question to you today is.. What is important to you in a game? Other things I notice people point out are voice acting, realism, easy and/or challenging gameplay..

Edit: Try to choose something less noticable or something that doesn't bother other people.. Voice acting is a good example of this.
FUN! Dead Rising, Crackdown, Fallout 3, Saints Row 2. What do they all have in common? Freeroam and the ability to screw off!

To put it simply, Co-Op games where a friend and I can do whatever the heck we want are my favorite games. That's why I'm looking forward to Dead Rising 2 so much now from today's announcement. I also really enjoy being able to freeroam and explore, like in Fallout and Oblivion.

(I won't name the game but if you've ever had to go through 4 menus to optimise for battle you've played it as well).
Final Fantasy VIII?

For me, having fun can be enough. 007: Nightfire doesn't have a great story or graphics but it's really fun in Multiplayer, whether with friends or bots. That alone makes me keep playing it.

But sometimes, a good story can pull me through a game even if the gameplay is lacking a little.
Not quite, it was pretty much every armored core game ever made. The over reaching story of a lone mech pilot sometimes made up for the terrible gameplay and menu dredging.

Characters.

This is like...number one for me. If I like the characters, I'm guaranteed to like the game, no matter what the gameplay's like (usually). And then usually, if I like the characters, I like the story because they're involved and I care about what happens to them, so the two go hand-in-hand for me.
