What is INDIE games?

I see it all the time around the forum and in the featured articles of the site....
what does it mean to be INDIE developer,game,movie......what does that term actually reffer to...i simply dont get it
When i see it i always think of India and that just doesnt seem right ..

It used to mean Independently Developed. So a game that was made by only 1 person.

Now it's used pretty loosely, it could mean 2-3 people or sometimes a small game studio will be called Indie if their games are particularly innovative.
