Is it the awsome libary of games? is it the slim editon? that fact thats its cheap?

The fact that it has the best collection of games and that it is incredibly durable(at least when compared to my xbox 360).

Exactly, now, I never had one, but I do want one. Not to play first party games, but third party games, like Shadow of the Colossus. The Xbox, as much as I love it, (it's the only console I have) had much worse third party support, same as the Gamecube.

That, and the fact that sony kept making systems long after their competitors switched exclusively to the new model. I'm pretty sure I could walk into a Wal-Mart and buy a brand new PS2 slim today, whereas the X-Box is long gone, and the Gamecube only lives on through the Wii's backwards compatibility. Incidentally, the Gamecube is no longer around because it lacked third party support. Just because there's current hardware capable of playing its games doesn't mean new games are still being made, and just because there's new games being made doesn't mean the system is still active -- otherwise the Dreamcast and the NES would both be considered current systems. Heck, there's even third party knock-offs of the NES and SNES which are sold at retro gaming stores, but they aren't active because because they have no first party support, and the only third party support is the occasional hobbyist game that gets published through the internet.

you named all the reasons straight off the bat, relatively cheap, great library of games, and the fact that you could bludgeon someone to death with it. (ok the last one is new)

Are you asking why the PS2 lasted so much longer than Xbox or GameCube? It's simply because Sony actually continued to support it. I remember (I think in late 2006) Microsoft issued an official statement saying, "We will focus on promoting the Xbox 360, and will no longer support the original Xbox development," I'm paraphrasing, but basically they said, "We're abandoning the original and moving onto this one." I don't remember if Nintendo made the same statement, but I remember that not long after the Wii came out, the Gamecube was pretty much given up on, not just by fans, but by Nintendo itself.
Sony on the other hand, actually said, "We'll be supporting the PS3, the PSP and the PS2." Heck, I think they were still talking about the PS2 during E3 2009.

It's as simple as the company support, I think.

that makes sense

and its also surprising as what you just said I thourght "droping suport for previous model" was pretty much the normal thing to do

I wonder why they continues to suport ps2 do oyu supose it hurt their entry into the next generation?

I think it was successful partly because it was the first(or at least first successful) multimedia console, along with the awesome third party support and constant support from Sony.

There's really no excuse to not have a PS2 nowadays. It's only $100 and most games are around the $10-$20. And its first/second party support is nothing to sneeze at either.

No, I don't think so. I think if PS3 had a super amazing launch, and started selling like crazy, they might've dropped the PS2. But because the PS3 had a somewhat of a rocky launch, they figured there was still more money to be made in the PS2, and decided to ride it out.

Still, Sony's always been good with supporting their old models. I remember back in like, 2003ish, I was still finding brand new PS1 games on sale. Not newly made, but newly printed, Greatest Hits versions.

That sony decided not to make a replacemet for it till the PS3.

And all the thrid party games, as well as a great ps1 category for its backwards compatitibilty.

Plus Jak & Daxter, as well as Ratchet a& Clank, and of course God of War (and the Team Ico titles, the Persona series, and KH).

The PS2 simply had the best variety in terms of games and as said before best 3rd party support. So Xbox got all the hip FPS games backed by Microsoft, Gamecupe got all the new shiny Nintendo franchise games, and the PS2 for the most part got everything else.
