What is it with companies and reddit?

I don't really go to reddit, so I can't comment on if it's a good 'system' or not, but I see companies more and more planning to go 'reddit style' for their forums or flat out closing their forums and going 'just use reddit', making announcements on it and not on their official channels...and all this with the customers on the forums complaining about disliking the reddit style, wanting them to please use their established official channels to make announcements since they don't want to have to check multiple places for news on a game...

So what *IS* it with reddit?

Because Reddit is a very easy to use (for most surface dwelling net-denizens) that puts forward a very opening and friendly persona.

Really? I know it's likely not indicative of the whole site, but when I think of Reddit I almost immediately think of r/atheism, which is not opening or friendly in the slightest.

Reddit has a very large installed userbase, is easy to use, and has the lazy-ass voting system that allows them to completely forgo moderation without having the place immediately buried in trolls.

That's because you aren't the kind of person Reddit is built for. It's for hip 20-somethings and aging Gen-Xers experimenting with the information revolution. People who just dip their toes into the vast ocean that is the internet. People just there to use social media, look at funny pictures and maybe have some casual conversation.

It's hard to have perspective of where exactly you exist on the internet, especially because the Escapist is still pretty "mainstream" by many peoples' standards, but you are part of a very different demographic from the majority of internet users.
