LOL yeah I get that a lot about my accent, I'm from a town right near Windsor in Berkshire...so it's damn English xD.

Accents are awesome. The only one I find really annoying is a male French one...no offence!.

But female French? I don't know what it is but...ooft.

So my girlfriends American friends always tell me how cute my British accent is (even though it isn't a "stereotypical" Londoner's accent), but I was just wondering what it is that American girls find so attractive about them...

Interesting and creative comments welcome^^

Edit: Wrong forum! I'm trying to find a Moderator to move it for me, apologies!
Whenever I go to the states I find that people spend half the time trying to work out what country I'm from... when I say England they look shocked. Maybe its the slight west mids accent I have.

Admittidly yeah if one of my mates did that to me I would of shunned him to lol. But from a outsiders view its pretty funny thing to say to tick off the Yanks.

Wishing no offense to the residents of Great Britain, no one here in America can tell the difference between the accent in most of the country, except for the most glaringly different ones. While I'm sure there's no identifiable generic, we most certainly have a solid understanding of what the generic British accent would be. Something like Stephen Fry or Jeremy Clarkson.
I think most Americans born in the early 90's to maybe the the late 70's can recognize a Leeds accent as "The black girl from Spice Girls had that one."

Much love for Welsh accents from me, dude!

I can't even place my accent. I've lived in West Yorkshire all my life, so I've grown up with the same accents all around me. It would be difficult to describe my own, it's kind of like explaining something you've had all your life but never bothered to understand.

As for the OP's problem, I don't know. I imagine it would be unfair to say that all American girls like English accents, but... as far as I can tell, a lot of them do. It's one of those mysteries, like how some people can eat butternut squash and enjoy it :O

It makes the person with the accent seem exotic, but no so exotic that it's scary or too foreign.
Alternately they could just be reminded of (Insert "hot" character/actor here) and go all mushy over it.

I'm reasonably certain that nobody from outside my area likes my particular brand of British accent. I sort of see their point, but I've been speaking this way for as long as I've been able to form words so it's unlikely to change at this late stage. Anyway, I like it.

[sub]'brand' is perhaps a small clue[/sub]

What I find quite humerous is that when I visited London about 10 years ago, I picked up the accent after only three days! I am from smack in the middle of the U.S., and yet after three days in London, I sounded like I had lived there my whole life!

What I want to know is why do we (Americans) substitute British accents for any and all non-American accents in the movies?

Got a Greek warrior? No problem! Just get some British guy to play the character and his accent will make it more believable! Has anyone else noticed this phenomenon?

I'm west country, but only mildly. I think I have a pleasant accent.
West Britain or West North America?

West North Americans (Not too Western, mind you) have pretty good accents.
Southwest england, a bit like Samwise Gamgee but much milder. I do know people who talk like him.

I suppose what I mean by the British accent is the one always portrayed on American TV.
Allow me to say this: I have never met a British person who has ever sounded like the American 'British' people on TV.

I myself am Welsh; I was born in Penarth, and supposedly Penarthians can speak better English than the English can. My accent is in no way Welsh, sadly. Personally, I find the Scottish accent something to die for. Most British accents annoy me, particularly if said accents sound like they're butchering the English language, or the person simply has the language skills of a four year old. I'm looking at you, chavs in my street -shakes walking stick-

For whatever its worth, the reason I don't like the Welsh accent is it is hard to take seriously, it just sounds too jolly, the one exception for me is when the accent in question is being used for a character who is old, wise and good (where oddly it works perfectly) in pretty much anyone situation I just find the Welsh accent distracting (like in Deathly Hallows, why Bill Nighy? Why?)

Me too, I don't know what it is about the accent but I think it is the chocolate of British accents and I have no problem saying that it is probably Britain's most attractive accent (despite being English and from the south east)

It does get a little annoying, when you have - your girlfriends sisters friends - 13 year old girls going "awwww how cute is his accent!"
Hmm, yes, that must get quite annoying. If you don't mind me asking, which part of England are you from?
I am from Hampshire, (North-of) in chavvy Andover! Nothing good to do in this town but go to the one half-decent club, or one of the many pubs...
My aunt lives in Andover!
Sorry.
Its awsome our accent.

Just a 'normal' one?
From the South East, so not Liverpool or Scouse, or Brummy.

I suppose its 'normal' for me, I don't know what a typical British accent would be like?
Why that's my accent too! Hampshire hi-five!

Anyways The southern accent is kinda typical, but it wouldn't be the one everyone thinks of when you say England... Still... I'm southern and I'm sexy...

I think there must be some air of sophistication or something that people associate with the accent.

Hell, Im told I have a kind of British-colonial/ New England accent, and its apperently strong enough that people cant actually believe im from Pennsylvania. I had one person ask which part of London I was from once.

British Accents are hands down my favourite in the world.

I love listening to their accent, Primeval did it for me! Now there does seem to be a fair bit of love for the Austrailian accent which I half understand.

I could just as easily say "What is it with the Irish accent?"
One of my English friends says that it's the most eargasmic accent she's ever heard.
Apparently the English love it.
She's not wrong, a soft Irish lilt can be seriously sexy. Oh, to meet a shy Irish red-head...
I tick two of those boxes... I enjoy not being ginger. :p
