It's a good way to raise your blood pressure to dangerous heights. Also, everyone will most likely have better weapons than you, and the only way for you to get those weapons is to kill those better equipped players enough times to get the achievements or pay Valve. So good luck with that, you're going to need it. By the way, the soldieer is not the basic class, since rather than having a general all purpose assault rifle type weapon, he has probably the most situational weapon in any game, a rocket launcher coupled with another situational weapon, the shotgun. Come to think of it, almost all the classes has a very situational weapon, it's pretty much just a glorified rock paper scissors. Every class is tailor made to destroy another specific class and nothing else.

Basic TF2 Knowledge:

It's a large scale FPS
Multiplayer only, but there's one (short) singleplayer mode
Comes by itself for around $20 on Steam, or around $30 on the Orange Box (which includes four other games. Yeah.)

There are several different game modes: Area Control, Capture the Flag, Payload, and tons of community-made modes.
There are around thirty different maps, not counting community maps.
Nine (very balanced) classes: Scout, Soldier, Pyro, Engineer, Heavy, Demoman, Medic, Sniper, and Spy.
It uses health-kit health, not recharghible health.
Around 50+ added weapons, and hats.
Despite above fact, the game is very well balanced.
EVERYTHING I mentioned is free (well, on the PC at least).

Best tip: Play as a Medic: Self healing, not much combat needed, basically just follow experienced players and learn the ropes. But please, heal the guys with the big guns.
Are there any mods/addons I should use with the game? I guess I will start as a medic.
In all honesty, you don't really have to start with any mods. Even the regular maps are fun and hectic, and almost every game is different due to random people joining in. If you pop in on a server (there's a massive list of them, you pick and choose which one to play on, each server tend to have a different style game on it, be it King of the Hill, Arena, ect) that has anything custom on it, you'll download it automatically most of the time.

Also, there's the auto-balance. If things get too one sided, like too many players quit on one team, it'll randomly scramble people around to even things out.

I started as Soldier. You fire a rocket launcher, do splash damage to targets around the impact site, can rocket-boost your jumps for crazy height, ect. But my love is for Pyro. Running around blasting things with a flamethrower just appeals to that animal side in me. Massive damage, decent health, but incredibly close ranged. Get close and hose 'em down. And sidestep. They get so confused by the flames, they usually have a hard time locking on to you.

Just mess around with all the classes. It's not like WoW, where you're gonna be stuck with it for 80+ levels. Find what's fun for you. Nobody gets mad if you switch around a bit to test stuff out. And if they do, screw 'em. They'll forget about it in a minute or two when they get taken out by the Sniper again.

Team Fortress in a nutshell:

Team Fortress is a team based first person shooter where two teams of players meet in an enclosed space (by enclosed I mean that there are natural limits to where the players can travel) and attempt to accomplish various objectives. These objectives vary in what they entail, but very generally there are only two variations: One Team Defends, One Team Attacks or Both Teams Defend and Attack Simultaneously.

Each team is comprised of several players who have the option of choosing one of nine classes. Each class has a particular role that they are especially well suited for and another that they are not. This sets up a sort of rock-paper-scissors arrangement where one class is well suited to dispatch another but is highly vulnerable to a third.

It's fun. I recommend it if you like FPSs and comedy. However, it's usually never good to go out on your own, unless you're Spy, Sniper, or maybe Scout, so work with your team.

Spy: Cloak, THEN Disguise. Otherwise, you'll give yourself away a bit. Never decloak where they can see you, unless you're disguised as their Spy. Disguise as classes that aren't expected to be doing things at all times, like Snipers, Scouts, or Engineers. They'll get suspicious if "their" Pyro isn't spy-checking, or "their" Medic isn't healing. If you can get a Dead Ringer, all the better. That will greatly increase your abilities. At the start of the round, it's sometimes wise to disguise as another member of your own team, just to put the other team off-guard for a little bit.

Sniper: Patience, patience, and more patience. Headshots are your friend. Also, watch your back for Spies, since you're a sitting duck while zoomed. Use your long range to your advantage to take out enemy Engineers' buildings. The slower classes are easier to hit, so choose a Heavy over a Scout, etc. Get rid of their Medics to help your teammates kill their patients.

Heavy: Get a Medic buddy, period. Protect your Medic buddy, period. Failing that, try to get a Sandvich. Otherwise, just shoot anything the other color, and soak up damage like a sponge. Target Medics if you see them.

Medic: Be a Medic buddy. Find a Heavy and follow him, healing him always. Change targets occasionally when other players need healing and your buddy can breathe for a few seconds. Be careful, though. If the other team sees you healing your buddy, you become the prime target to take out first. Remember that you can heal your buddy from around corners, so you're not in the direct line of fire. If you can't find a Heavy, try finding a Soldier, Demoman, or maybe a Pyro. If you want to be an offensive Medic (not usually a good idea, but it can work), try being part of a Double-Medic team with Ubersaws.

Pyro: Spy-check always. Try to set fire to teammates. If nothing happens, you're cool. If they catch fire, they're a spy. Fire somewhat randomly into thin air at times to possibly hit cloaked Spies. If you even suspect a cloaked Spy, fire into the air all around you. On the offense, it's more important to set fire to someone than to kill them. Your teammates can finish them off. If you want to finish them off yourself, learn how to switch quickly to your shotgun or axe. Watch for Medics, Dispensers, and Snipers with Jarate, who can douse the flames you set. If you want to be respected, learn to air-blast grenades, rockets, etc. back at who fired them. It's a bit tough to get, but your team will greatly thank you for it if you do.

Engineer: At the start, throw down a teleporter entrance right outside your spawn, then go back in for more ammo. Find a good choke-point, then build a sentry, then a dispenser. If you find a good, somewhat secluded spot, lay down your teleporter exit. Upgrade your sentry first and foremost. Then work on your dispenser, if you're defending, or teleporter if you're on offense. Always keep your buildings repaired and full. Be on constant look-out for Spies.

Demoman: Learn good sticky bomb placement, such as around doors and near choke-points. Practice your ballistics. Try to destroy enemy Engineer buildings. Practice sticky-jumping.

Scout: Be on the move always, or you'll die. Expect to die often anyway until you get good. Strafing and double-jumping are key. Use your speed to outrun everyone, other than other Scouts. Watch out for turrets.

Soldier: Practice rocket-jumping. Shoot the other team. Nothing too fancy about the Soldier.

Also, you'll see a lot of shiny unlockable weapons.
You will be jealous, but most are just more specialized and everything is balanced to death, so don't feel jealous. Just be jealous of the guy with the hat, THOSE are hard to get...

I'm bored of wow and have done some reading. I hear that you get drops and stuff, that sounds pretty cool. Is there a place I can go or a guide I should read to get the basics down before playing? Is there a newbie mode or something? I don't want to be "that guy". Also, what do you DO in the game?
Basically it's achevement farming and capture the flag.

Yeah... With 54 extra weapons to make 1 hat... (Either that, or they bought it with real-world money.)

The only hats that aren't part of that are the Alien Hat (win 2 online games of Alien Swarm), Worms Hat, Bill's Hat, Max's Head (bought the associated game within the first few days), Halo (didn't cheat to get achievements at a certain time), Ghastly Gibus (dominate someone who is wearing one), and the Halloween mask (collect 20 pumpkins on Halloween).

best hat sim ever

tf2 is awesome. since your starting new you will die alot, just dont let it get to you. Remeber its "team" fortress, if you just run off and dont help your team it will be harder for your team to win.

Also check out the taunts (default is G) some are bloody funny (espcailly if you kill someone with one) each class has 1 for each weapon (ok mebbe not the community weapons but all the valve ones)

Some minor tips:
1: Get a mic. Not needed, but makes it more enjoyable to talk with people, and easier to strategize.
2: Try to use the class that best fits a situation.
Lacking defense? Build a sentry as an Engineer.
Enemy defense to strong? Go Spy and make an opening.
No Medics? Go Medic.
3: The new update should mean a resurgence of noobs and rusty veterans, so don't worry.
4: Even with all the new weapons, the basic set are still extremely effective, so don't worry.
5: Try to find a server you like, (like the Escapist servers, nudge nudge).

So you played TF2 for what, six minutes?

Any class can beat any class. A scout can beat a soldier, a heavy can beat a sniper, and a medic can beat a pyro. It all depends 100% on the skill of the players involved.

It's looks like Pixar cartoon, plays like TFC, and smells like napalm in the morning.

It's a well-balanced FPS that emphasizes on teamwork and strategy, but it's much less serious than that. It's easy yo pick up and a blast to play.
