My first GameBoyColour game was Pokemon Yellow version and it was revolutionary. Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Pikachu... ALL IN ONE GAME *head explodes*
Wait, you could get the three starters IN ADDITION to pikachu in Yellow?

i've been completely off pokemon for a few years now (post 15 years old)... get a few drinks in me to increase my suggestibility, and suddenly i really want to play it... ( i guarantee i won't care in the morning...)... so my conclusion HAS to be that the appeal to pokemon games is something identifiable... someone that makes perfect sense to no one but yourself while drunk, and no one in any situation beyond that...

essentially, "something unidentifiable", so there is very little point in postulation...

Yes, and compare it with red blue or green version, nothing compares to the yellow version. You get them from three seperate places and get to battle the elite with all charizard blastoise and venusaur with pika spamming thunder on the trainer that uses water pokemon (the 1st one). It is AWEsOME. Your childhood isnt complete till you play it.

I really tried. First i tried the original series, then i tried Soul Silver. It never managed to keep me going for more than 1 hour. I just found it boring, predictable, mundane and uninspiring. Just like most of the jRPGs.

I guess the fault is in the fact that i actually expect RPG value from a jRPG while its more like forced story mode with little to no actual choice included. I just dont see any difference between the first and 100th fight in those.

This is what I realized, which is why I'm asking this question.

I've always liked Pokemon. Red version was my very first game. I liked the concept of monsters, both cute and ferocious, duking it out in friendly competition at first, but what REALLY been drawing me toward the series as of late are how deep the game mechanics are, and how creative you can actually be with your teams. I mean, it's alright to take down the Elite Four with only your level 100 Mewtwo, but it gets boring after a while. Seeing your First-Generation-Only team's double battle strategy where your Raichu uses Fake Out and your Technician Persian wipes out the helpless, flinching opponent afterward with Assurance play out perfectly is totally satifying.

I guess, for me, Pokemon was a game that I enjoyed as a kid for the mindless entertainment, but I enjoy it now for the amount of strategy, thinking and preparation involved, which makes the win ever so sweeter.

The battling system is what really appeals to me. The depth that it has, and all the combinations and strategies are really fun.

I like leveling up my pokemon and watching them grow and evolve from tiny little things into great killing machines that inspire fear!

For me, its nostalgia. I sank so many hours into Silver. I haven't really had the opportunity to sink my teeth into Soulsilver yet. Just too damned busy :(
