The entire Orange Box, and the fantastic Mechwarrior 2
A man of my own heart!

Mech4: Mercs was awesome, but it's hard to go past the clasics. Mech 2 was the first computer game I played... and it's still one of the best.

The Orange Box needs no further explaination. Freeman + GLaDOS? In ONE box? TOGETHER? Winner.

I don't really believe there can exist a thing like the best game. Everyone has a different opinion on what makes a good game so you will never be able to please everyone. As for what I'd recommend for the best computer game... well there are just too many worthy candidates to name :)

I'm a big city-building fan myself (Pharoah and Children of the Nile sucked my life away), and I like a few RTS games, like Warcraft 3 and Dawn of War.

I'd have to go with my favorite FPS's though:

- Team Fortress 2
- Battlefield 2

And then add:

- Sins of a Solar Empire (w/expansion)
- Hinterland
- Spectromancer

(Okay so I like a lot of strategy games offered by Stardock's Impulse system - sue me)

You mean like Uplink?
Hey, someone else who knows Uplink, cool. I still like that game a lot, it's very original and atmospheric.

Another game I always recommend is DOOM (part 1 or 2 of course). Or StarCraft. Those were the games.

Sigh.

The answer is always the same.

Deus Ex.

Any other answer is HERESY.

Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. Great game from the makers of the first two Fallouts. Steampunk, isometric, open-world game.

Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate 1/2. Great RPGs from Bioware, based in Forgotten Realms.

Starcraft. You probably have it but I need not explain why its amazing.

Planescape: Torment. Never played it, but its supposed to be one of the best wRPGs ever created.

and the king of all PC games (...for me): Grim Fandango. The master of all adventure games.
Arcanum is a seriously awesome game that breaks a lot of the stereotypes and is just a blast to play. All I'll advise to new players is SAVE THE FUCKING DOG!

Planescape: Torment is _the_ best RPG you will find. It shits all over JRPGs and does a few nasty things even to its close cousins, the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale series'. There aren't too many other games out there where you can talk someone into believing they don't exist and *poof* there they go in a (different) puff of logic.

My recomendations:

It's probably been said already but it bears repeating: Oblivion. No matter how hard I try, every 6 months I go back to that game.

In terms of RTS, I'm a fan of Red Alert 2. I still don't know how I feel about Red Alert 3.

Shooter? Call of Duty 4.

Horror? Not F.E.A.R., Go Bioshock.

Puzzle? Portal by a landslide

Small games? I'm a fan of here [http://www.kloonigames.com/blog/games/choke-on-my-groundhog-you-bastard-robots] respectively)

Good luck and have fun =)
