I'm stuck between 2 ps3 exclusives. Heavy Rain and Metal Gear Solid 4. Heavy Rain for its originality and MGS4 for its great mix of gameplay and story telling.
Portal was REALLY good as well but in my eyes a 45 min game cant justify being "the best game ever." Maybe Portal 2 will be

Half-Life 2

Perfect pacing, thick atmosphere, brilliant music, perfect voiceacing, likable characters and just generably fun.

In my opinion time is irrelevant if the game engages you for the full amount of time and you feel satisfied with the ending.
Did you really feel like the game needed to be 11 hours long? And seriously 45 minutes? On your first time? Lies.

Of course your opinion is your own, just thought I'd follow up.

Portal is a great challenge kind of game.
L4D 1/2 are my favorite multiplayer games to play with friends.
Oblivion for open world and side quests.
Dragon Age for story and characters.

Mass Effect or Dead Rising.

Mass effect was just perfect all around, but the story finished it off for me.

Dead Rising was pretty good on the gameplay side, but it was the story that really got me into it(I even beat the story on my first time through the game), and that story is the thing that held the whole game together for me.

Best is hard to say... I'd probably logged the most hours in Final Fantasy VII... Played through that probably half a dozen times already...

Fallout 3 is a game that I consider fantasticly great, and Sly Cooper 2 and Geist are both fantastic games, but the best game is one I've played 30 times plus, Resident Evil 4 (GC version), great story (if a little silly), a great learning curve, Leon and his sexiness (I'd go gay for him, I'm sorry but I would) and the merchant...it's just...fantastic

KOTOR- Wow this game did pretty much everything right. The dialog was awesome. Your party talked to each other. It has a revolutionary PAUSE button. So many strategy games force you to do all this shit in real time. This game you could take things one at a time. I literally gasped when the plot twist revealed itself. You really feel for your party. The things they say are very climatic and downright interesting. The game is much more difficult if you want to be a good guy. So you feel like its the way the world actually works. Masterpiece. Best campaign
I have to agree completely with you. When I found out the plot twist, I actually thought the game was joking or something. I mean, it was just so AWESOME! It didn't hurt that the plot twist made your character a total badass.
But yeah, this is what kept me liking gaming.

World of Warcraft.

Say what you will about the current state of the game, the casual idiots that plague it these days. But think back to the original game, early 2005. Molten Core was new and exciting. Hitting the level cap was a real accomplishment. The world felt so mysterious, vibrant and enormous. No game could ever match that level of awe for me. It was such a breath of fresh air after playing Halo and RTSs for so long.

Doesn't "BEST GAME" intital a game we would love and call our favorite. Im kinda confused... whatever. Okami, i love it the controls are polished and i dont remember any glitches, the story was a feast, the landscape was complete eyecandy, and the bosses were all creative.

I can't choose

Golden Sun series
Metroid Prime
Fire Emblem Path of Radiance series (though blazing sword and sealed sword are pretty much tied with them)
Legend of Zelda: Majoras Mask. I first played it when I was seven and its been in my favorites ever since.

That would be the Baldur's Gate series. This is the one I've played the most, and I'm not too shy to say that I think it's the greatest of all time. Of all time!

Close runner-up would be the Icewind Dale series.

The possibilities in these games are endless. In fact, I feel an urge to start a new game right now, but I have to leave for work. Maybe I should call in sick.

ADDED: it also never ceases to amaze me how so many people mention games that came out last week in these best-game-ever-threads.
