Saints Row 2...OK, OK, I'll be serious. But still, Saints Row 2 feels a lot like GTA (and more so than those that followed), and it is better than all the GTA games.

Anyways, Vice City was my favorite. Really, I just liked the 80s Miami setting a lot. It certainly drew me in far more than the other GTA settings.

Toss up between 2 and 3.
And anything after Vice City I don't really care for, with the exception of LCS.

I think saints row 2 should count. It is just so unashamed to be a GTA clone, and it's a good one too. It dose everything that you wanted GTA to do but it didn't.

San Andreas is probably my personal favorite of the series.

IV being my favorite mostly because it was my first proper entry into the series and just because I'm actually good at driving. Episodes count as well because there is nothing quite like being a Jew in a Sons of Anarchy vidya adaptation and a rich son of an oil sheikh being your wingman for cool shit when you're trying to handle a flaming homosexual nightclub owner from burning his business and himself to the ground, with you along for the ride.

Best is somewhere between San Andreas and V, functionally. Vice City for dat soundtrack and atmosphere, even if it had the landmass of a kiddie pool.

San Andreas, have a lot of great memories spending the summers at my grandmas house playing it with my brother.

San Andreas I believe... Hm. That's a good question though...

I have yet to play GTA V, but I saw my bro play it a crapton. Does that count? :p

I have very fond memories of GTA II though in my much younger years.

I loved my first playthrough of San Andreas the most when it came out. I was around 14 or 15 though, so I was excited by most good games I played a lot more than I am now. Now though, I enjoy IV and V the most. Both have strengths and weaknesses, and I feel like the best GTA would merge the best parts of both.

Only played I, II, III, and Vice City. Of them, III would be my favorite.

Definitely Vice City. That Miami Vice feel is absolutely perfect for the series imo, and I hope VI makes a grand return to it.

San Andreas. Then probably Vice City, because of the entire 80's feel. Then... GTA 2, which i would gladly play again, if steam version wouldn't have those framerate problems.

Vice City. I feel it had a more cohesive story. I do like San Andreas, but, there are only 2 or 3 characters in that game I liked, I can't really enjoy a game if I don't like the characters.

I also have to nominate the unusual contender; Saints Row 2.

It really felt like a GTA game. Your character was hard, merciless, and devoid of a soul. And yet despite those qualities, he/she was a likeable character.

I've only played two games in the series: Vice City and San Andreas, and VC is the only one I've finished. Coincidentally, it's my favorite one(except for the stupid RC helicopter missions). In SA I got to San Fierro and just kind of stopped playing. That was 10 years ago, so it's unlikely I'll end up picking it back up.

IV I wanted to try until I heard that half the game is cleaning up after and catering to your idiotic cousin.
V I'm actually interested in, but I'm waiting for it to get cheap enough to pick up.

If we're allowed to use SR2, I vote that instead.

I would say that San Andreas is the overall best because it's the most well-rounded. GTA IV had a great story, but really restrained gameplay. GTA V had the most refined gameplay, but the story, atmosphere and satire were lacking in direction.

I will say that Vice City was criminally overrated. It felt like a reskinned version of GTA III. The missions were repetitive and mostly dull. I guess it depends how much you like the excess of the 80's, and I personally thought the 80's were gaudy.

Probably GTA1. I never played 2 or San Andreas and 3 was a massive let down after that I only played Vice City, 4 and 5 round friends houses and I was not very impressed or entertained but I did get some fun from 1 with the cheats so I guess I will go with that for both my answers.

Vice City was the one I had the most fun with. Granted I only played GTA 3, then Vice, never touched 4, and dabbled a little with 5. Honestly the GTA line just isn't my thing, Saint's Row is more what I have fun with of that "gangster sandbox" concept. I enjoyed the 80's references in Vice City, enough to get past the dickish behaviour of the main character, and the clunky mechanics.

If you know the songs below, then you know my answer. :D
Vice City.

That vibe is just too good.

That music.

That location.

That story, using bits of popular movies and TV (Miami Vice and Scarface, etc.).

And I ra-a-annnn,
I ran so far awwwaaaaayyyyyyyy.
I just raaa-aaa-aannnnn,
I ran all night and daa-ayyy-ayyyyy.
I couldn't get away.

Two, minutes, to middddddnniiiiight.

You take my self,

Josies on vacation far awayyy,
come on over and talk it overrrr.
There's so much I wanna sayyy,
You know I like my girls a little bit older.
I just wanna use your love, toniiiiiiight.
I don't wanna lose your love tonnnniiiiightttttttttttt.

"San Andreas" was my favourite GTA game, though I'd wager "Vice City" was the better (and best) game in the series. Maybe I just liked goofing around with SA's cheats more.

I'm not very fond of the GTA games, and I've never really been sure as to why. They don't grip me, yet I keep going back to play them.

And yes: everyone who said "Saints Row 2" has the correct answer. That game's my favourite of its series - and it's a pretty close call between 2 and IV for best game.
