The World Ends With You. YMMV, but if you don't really mind JRPG tropes being tossed around, and once you deal with the difficulty curve, it's a heck of a lot of awesome.
Difficulty curve? Does it get harder later or something? I'm on the bit just after where you unlock hard mode. Week 2 i believe

Easy if you just concentrate on keeping your partner's combo going and just move your guy across the screen every now and then. Or is the ice pillar pin just that broken?

I keep my level roundabout half my actual level by the way. Spamming the one gunshot pin and the ice pillar pin just wins everything.

OT: The Phoenix Wright games. Trials and Tribulations (the third one) to be specific. See detective games, this is how you write overarching story points without dedicating an entire section of the game to just setting up the big conspiricy and ruining the pacing.

Not to mention to fun in these games is solving the mystery, if you spend such a long time not solving anything, or not even making visible progress you're doing it wrong

Looking at you LA Noire.

If you've got the money and don't mind needing a FAQ to beat some of the missions, I'd suggest JUMP! Ultimate Stars. Whether or not you like anime, it's not really my thing, it's a fun Super Smash Bros. style fighting game with pretty much every manga that Jump has had represented in some way.
Yeah thats a cool game Ill have to dig it out and try it again sometime I really dont know what the best DS game of all time is though, sure Chrono Trigger is quite good but not the highpoint of Jrpgs imo (but worth a playthrough) the game that ate up most of my time on DS was puzzle quest its still the only DS game I played over a console game.

I mainly use my DS to play GBA games if im honest so my knowledge of DS games isnt that extensive the only game I havent got that I have always wanted is Ossu Takae Quendan (hope that how its spelt) but I think I may have left that too late.

I might try the worlds ends with you now though reading some of the comments (next time I go away).

For me, it's Hotel Dusk. Yeah, it got boring sometimes, but it had an excellent story to tell, some great writing, interesting characters and it had a memorable aesthetic. Shame it didn't sell better.

Agreed. Either that, the Ace Attorney games, or the Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor games (which share a lot of thematic similarities with TWEWY).

EDIT: Of course, the guy with the TWEWY avatar is a teensy bit biased . . .

Thinking about getting a handheld, as I seem to need one more and more, so I would like to test some waters and find out, what is the best DS game ever??
What kind of games do you like? It's pretty hard to compare the best games since most of them are in different genres. 999, Ghost Trick and Ace Attorney are awesome, but if you don't like visual novels you won't like them. There are JRPGs like Pokemon, SMT, and Chrono Trigger and original games like The World Ends with You along with the classic platformers, puzzle dungeons, kart racing etc. The generic best isn't always what you'll like, at least say a genre or something you want to see in a game.

If I had to pick the overall best I'd say TWEWY since you can't get a game like that anywhere else.

Disgaea, or Final Fantasy: Tactics A2... then again I am an SRPG whore at the moment... (Saying that I am playing MGS:3D at the mo, and that is pretty godly to be honest!)

I want to say Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, but you continue to revisit the same dungeon dozens of times and you need to memorize shortcuts because you have a limit to how long you can actually be in the dungeon. So I quit the game after I had beaten all the other dungeons.

For me, the best Nintendo DS game is Megaman ZX Advent. You take all of what made Megaman ZX great and add even more awesomeness. Not only are you allowed to use the ZX model, and the other previous models, but you get Model A and the 8 maverick bosses you defeat. Not to mention this game is hard and there's a lot of replay and exploration that goes with this game.

I hope they bring out it's sequel, because the game ends with a cliffhanger.

Pokemon, Heart Gold/Soul Silver or perhaps Pokemon Platinum. I also loved Super Scribblenauts and "regular" Scribblenauts.

Hotel Dusk and it's sequel The Last Window are both incredible games...I miss Cing, Nintendo need to bring back the team for one more game

EDIT: Yeah Hotel Dusk, Last Window, every Ace Attorney, The World Ends With You, Dragon Quest IX, god damn, the DS is a brilliant console

One of the many Pokemon games or I'd cast my vote for Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective. That is a game with great story, gameplay, characters, everything wraps up nicely and the ending is fantastic.

If you do buy a DS, you owe it to yourself to check out Ghost Trick
9001% This o.o I got it when ported to the iPhone, and it literally peaked at #1 on my games for 2012. All of the rest have to compete for that place now, when I usually give a game that spot at the end of the year XD

Ace Attorney of course, I've never played a DS game as many times as I have played those through.

Castlevania Games (descending from most favorite): Order of Ecclesia, Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin.

Chrono Trigger-Awesome port that works really well with the DS. One of my favorite games of all time.

Contra 4- I spent a month with this game on hard mode and I can beat Contra and Super C without dying.

Megaman Zero Collection

New Super Mario Brothers

Metroid Prime Hunters- I am still amazed that they pulled this off on a handheld

I think I may be the only person who didn't really like The World Ends with You. I should give it another shot sometime.
