What is the best Rock/Metal band in history(so far)?

I think that Van Halen is the best metal band so far. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, knows who they are, and most people like a decent chunk of their songs.

I don't think there is one, purely because most bands go through a period of experimenting and a decent amount of time it doesn't work.

Anyways. As jck said, there isnt one. But that is because "The best" is subjective. Van Halen will be the worst to someone, while it is the best to you.

Well I don't think everyone will ever agree on just one band since there is such a different range of subgenres under the blanket of both rock and metal. I'd have to go with the Flaming Lips if I had to just pick one band. Their live show is absolutely incredible, their albums are ambitious, and the music is fucking fantastic. I can't see any band past or present topping what they have done when it comes down to live performances.

In my eyes it doesn't get much freakier, weirder, or better than The Flaming Lips.

I think I've heard like one of their songs and I didn't like it that much. I think you should hesitate before making such generalisations in future. Especially when it's obvious they are false.

I don't think you can choose a greatest band of all time when it is so subjective.
