Planescape Ftw,
Anyone who hasn't played this title owes it to themselves to torrent the game.
Don't feel bad the company is dead, and it is no longer sold in stores.

Only recommended to those who enjoy reading.

Planescape Torment, Fallout series, Baldur's Gate series, Arcunum.
What happened to games like these?
Only one to rival them has been the horribly unpolished Bloodlines (arguably NWN series as well).

Morrowind and Fallout win the gold. I really felt like I was playing a role there. RPG for me means more than "This game has levels and loot."

Reading over this thread, apparently most disagree with me.

I'm split between KoTOR and Morrowind. Those two games to me were the pinnacle of roleplaying games for the computer/consoles. Some of my other favorites are Witcher and Vampire: Bloodlines. I'm hoping that Fallout 3 turns out to be a real big hit.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Good character customization, tons of side quests, lots of exploration, excellent writers, and a huge voice acting budget.

Favorite thing to do; get really fat and parachute off the mountain in my underwear. Don't tell me you haven't ever wanted to do that in real life.

(now who's going to mention witcher?)
I haven't had a great deal of experience with RPGs so The Witcher would be one of them.

My absolute favourite however, at least at the moment would be Mass Effect; Tons and tons of dialogue options, all voice-acted brilliantly. Amazing graphics, great story, the combat wasn't too bad either, and it was an original idea.

This opinion will change no doubt over the next year or so when I discover more RPGs that are new or even old ones.

I'm torn between Fallout(1&2) and the Baldur's Gate storyline (1, tosc, 2, the weird expansion-that-wasnt-as-good-as-SOA-but-still-had-to-be-played-for-the-sake-of-the-cracking-story).

Fallout 3 will fail to live up the RP experience and probably storyline (come on people, the chaps behind the decision to use something like 4 voice actors in Oblivion can't replicated the power of the interplay/black isle vision. Though to be honest, no game has since reached that level of openness, freedom of choice and scope, not to mention the depth and significance of character creation, despite becoming much easier on the eye ;)

Still, Fallout3 could yet be a great game when judged against most other franchises and I will certainly be purchasing a copy (considering fallout 1/2 are still ranked in the top 10 pc games ever made 12 years on*), but if it plays like (or has an atmosphere comparable to) Oblivion (shallow, depthless, meaningless dull quests) then i might just shed a tear out of pity for the generation of xbox gamers who won't have played the original and never will as a consequence.

If you havn't yet played these games, they will probably be available for £5 or equivilalent currency in the bargain bucket in your local games store (or you could use less legal means, whatever).

in no other game, the world & NPCs were so alive. (because of the 3-day structure, each person had some very very real stuff to do on those days, which you could influence)
And because it was not a big, epic, endless world, it was actually warm, cosy, friendly, intimate.
OMG i finally find someone on the internets with the same point of view that i have!

I still can't figure out why ppl think it's so bad. they probably think you have to beat the ENTIRE day in 72 REAL-TIME hours, and get scared away by that (aka ppl who never touched th game). if they made more of those zeldas, i'd buy consoles just for them.

Thank you for bringing back all the Baldur's Gate 2 quotes. so many good memories of those games except that i never completed either.
1 because on the expansion I killed all the werewolves on the island and no-one in the village knew that I had so couldn't advance the story.
2 because my dad wiped the computer after a virus (he always blamed my games for causing them too)
But fantastic none the less.
FF7 and 8. Eight was my first, then I picked up 7 so they hold special places for me.
Ocarina of Time. Especially cos my girl friend at the time had played it and loved it so it was something we did together. Just adds a little something when you enjoy the experience with someone doesn't it?

Oh.... I didn't realize there were TWO of these threads.

Winner:
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

Though it has many flaws.... it's a classic adventure game... you play it ANY WAY you want. That's a true RPG

Runner up:
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Another vote to the Baldur's Gate series. More Minsc quotes?

"No effect? I need a bigger sword!"

"The bigger they are, the harder I hit!"

But for me one of the funniest in the game was Yoshimo's "Hayya! Hehe, tourists love that stuff..." and "We must be doubly careful. I'm sure all manner of stupid mouse traps await our toes in the dark!"

Half Life 2. I know this isn't considered an RPG, but hear me out.

RPG stands for role playing game, and the way Half Life 2 was written, and scripted made me feel like I was Gordon Freeman. I stepped into his role more fully than I have stepped into the role of any other game character. I was playing a role. It recreated more of a feeling of table top role playing than any game featuring the level, and skill advancement systems that usually pigeon hole a game as an RPG ever has.

And if you don't accept my notion that the idea of what an RPG actually is should be drastically reevaluated industry wide then I'll say Baldur's Gate 2 was the best RPG I've ever played for your benefit.

Very strong representation of D&D based western RPGs here, which is comforting to a new member. I enjoy those as well as JRPGs, kind of like how people are allowed to like steak and chocolate (these items not meant to have any symbolic value). Generally combining the two is less than delicious.

My favorite D&D RPG was probably Planescape Torment, though I'll admit to enjoying Neverwinter. Honestly I've always wanted to play Baldur's Gate and its progeny, but it is extremely cruel to the starting Wizard, which I am rabidly devoted to playing. I'm sure I could have managed it if I had more patience when I tried, but that's been a long time past.

My favorite JRPG was Valkyrie Profile and its successor VP2: Silmeria, with close runner-ups FF:Tactics, Disgaea, Chrono Trigger, and various old old console games that were somehow great at the time despite being horrid by more recent standards.

I have to say its Runescape :(. When i was younger i played it alot of, now i got 52 lvl noob there o_O Last visited about 600 days ago. Oblivion was also good but i hated the caves. They were distressing. WoW was good only for a short time.
E: I've heard FO2 is very good? Is it?

I loved Final Fantasy(s), IV, VI, and yes, I enjoyed FF7 and FF10. My first gameboy game (besides Tetris) was a Final Fantasy which I absolutely loved. I think the one I've spent the most time on was Tactics which I rented from Blockbuster a long time ago and talked them into letting me buy it for like $20 (I found out years later that it had been worth something like $150 when I bought it because it was so rare). I played that game into the ground much like Final Fantasy 7. Got and did everything and I think I maxed out the clock on it too.

I played one of the Breath of Fire games and enjoyed it but never got too far because I could only play at a friend's house.

I recently played Chrono Trigger nearly to the end before becoming annoyed because I had no idea where I was supposed to go and then in my recent reformat I completely forgot to back up the save so it's all gone.

Most RPG's I play go the way of Chrono Trigger, though, so I can't say giving up and then forgetting about it is a fluke. I nearly beat Legend of Dragoon then put it down because I got bored. I recently replayed Star Ocean on the PS1 then put it down and recently tried to pick it back up but now I forget what I was doing. I played a fair amount of Legends of Legaia, almost no FF8, absolutely no FF9, never even picked up Chrono Cross, lost patience with Planescape: Torment, and after too many hours of Oblivion I uninstalled it and have never looked back. Oh, and I never made it out of the second town you go to in Morrowind because I had just come off a prolonged Everquest addiction and I simply didn't have the patience to dick around in a video game.

The reason I haven't said Fallout is that sadly, I played Fallout 2 very very poorly when it came out and was unable to enjoy it, entirely through my own stupidity. Since then I have been unable to get it to run on newer machines and have subsequently lost my disc.

If there's some version of Fallout 1 and 2 floating around in the aether that I can enjoy, I would be happen to give them a shot now that I am not a moron (hopefully).

Well Vagrant Story stole over a thousand hours of my life trying to deck out a full Damascus armor set and would have stolen a few hundred more if the game hadn't been stolen.

Disgaea stole about 300 hours from me and the Disgaea 2 game has stolen about six hundred hours.

Oblivion has a lot of my life invested as I like the concept of making it the game I want to make it into. I can assassinate bandits and marauders. I can be a powerful mage and kick ass and summon demons. I can hack my enemies down. I can brew potions and poisons. I love the freedom that I get by just changing a few items and having a ton of skills.

However, I have to say that Disgaea 2 still has a ton of my life and will get a ton more.
