I'd say the battle of Endor though...

Nobody does space battles as well as Gainax in my opinion. The understanding of relativity and huge scale in time and space of the battle in Aim for the Top/Gunbuster is hard to match. Then you have Aim for the Top 2/Diebuster where the solar system ends up being trashed in a pretty spectacular way.
I like Homeworld space battles the best out of games.

EVE Online has some pretty epic ones quite regularly. I've been part of 100-man battles, and those are frantic enough; I can't imagine doing a 300-man.
Homeworld 2 also holds promise; Mass Effect and the sequel are excellent.
In terms of movies, my favourite space battle is the final one from Serenity. Definitely a cooler moment of recent cinema.

There was this one time, we had just raided a slaver and taken all the creatures. Little did we know they had backup. So there I was, cargo full of live beings, out-maneuvering a battle ship, three cruisers, and I don't know how many fighters. I didn't dare a direct assault given our cargo, so we.....

I loved that game, it was aaall space battle, from the perspective of a fighter pilot! You're not this big admiral commanding all the ships, you're just in the thick of it and it is epic!
if you get hit by a beam from an enemy ship, you're done. There are some battles that are full of ships pew-pewing back and forth.
Though in terms of just watching, I'd say Gundam 00's final battle.
