Easily Piplup, because it evolves into easily my favorite water pokemon of any generation, Empoleon. Not only does it have a surprisingly awesome typing (seriously you can get a lot of use out of water steel), but it also has one of the most impressive designs for a pokemon to date, seriously look at the bastard, that is someone you don't mess with.

Cyndaquil.

Mostly I'm a bigger fan of Gen 1, but Cyndaquil's just such a great design.

In terms of practibility, Mudkip is the best. Water-Ground hybrids are pretty resilient and all-around good fighters with a lot of good resistances and movesets. (Unless you're facing Grass types, of course).

Charmander is number two because of how useful it is that the final evolution is part Flying.

Chikorita.

Because it's a pear.

(Serious answer: Cyndaquil, because I had a Typhlosion who would single-handedly defeat the Elite 4 and champion, taking out one of them entirely with a Rollout.)

He is correct

Seriously. This man is correct. Piplup evolves into one of the most unique, not to mention, useful pokemon as a starter. He can tank and if bred with Yawn can spread sleep status.

Empoleon is seriously one pokemon you do not fuck with:

Charmander, because it evolves into a motherfucking dragon. I'm sorry, but "grows up to be a motherfucking dragon" trumps any and all opposing arguments.
Stealth Rock.

Or for that matter, any rock move at all.

It's a bigger weakness than water types.

Squirtle, always squirtle.

*reads up to see this had already been said, isn't surprised*

K to make it different: always squirtle, except when its charmander, back in gen 1 there wasn't that many cool dragon types...Im not fond of dragonite and though i love gyarados (fav pokemon overall), he is more of a sea leviathan then a classic fire breathing dragon. So yeh charmander gets runner up position.

Oh when i say dragon type i mean looking like a dragon rather then stats wise (charizard was fire/flying if i recall..)

I want to say Chikorita for nostalgia purposes, but if anyone wanted to challenge me on my opinion, I couldn't back it up.

I'd just be left in the Pokémon Center feeling slightly less awesome. It probably is Squirtle.

If we're talking pure power, it's Torchic as it's the only one that sits in Uber tier (or it did last I checked). Otherwise it's squirtle, he's so cuuute.

*insert name of fire starter here*

Seriously, I don't think there has been a bad one yet. Fire Badgers, Fire Boars, Fire Apes, fucking Fire Apes!

My personal favorite (and my favorite pokemon) is Cyndaquil. Also, GSC is my favorite gen ever (although Witney makes it hard).

Fire badger don't give a shit.
Yeah. In terms of looks, I got to go with Cyndaquil too.

That said, I think Squirtle can become more powerful.

I'd go with Digimon instead of Pokemon, and pick Beelzemon. :p

I'm a water type lover, my first Pokemon game was gold and Totodile was the man! Although Mudkip came along and replaced it at number 1 on my list. Not only is he cute and adorable but his evolution Swampert will wreck your shit.

Obligatory first gen answer: Charmander. Simply because Charizard is a badass Dragon (SHUT UP HE IS A DRAGON I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU SAY).

I found that Bulbasaur has a very devastating combo once it's fully evolved: sleep powder + solar beam. I'm really excited about playing with Fennickin though and, absolutely loved Totodile.

...

I'm picking Totodile...Ice Fang is a killer.

Venusaur is now in OU. Blaziken got sent to Ubers because of speed boost. All Venusaur needed was speed, it got it with it's new dream world ability when it's in the sun. Charizard has horrible typing, gets ***** slapped like the little chump that he is. All Blastoise is good for is rapid spinning. Venusaur is Solarbeaming, Hp: Firing all the bitches in OU. Venusaur wins hands down. Take your x4 weak to stealth rock Charizard, get the hell out of my sight.

Only played the first 2 gens, but I have to say Snivy/Smugleaf looks pretty awesome. I liked Totodile for 2nd gen, and his evolutions look the best- I think that Feraligator was also notable for being the only one to break the game's 10 character name limit.

We used to trade the two Pokemon back and forth so we could keep them when we started a new game, specifically for our annual battle, it was very sad but we were really young.
Not as sad as using two gameboys and two versions of a game so you could trade pokemon and get them to evolve... I had no lame friends when I was little.

OT: Either Squirtle, Charmander, or Totodile.

I'm leaning towards Totodile because it's an awesome Alligator monstrosity.

It probably would've been Squirtle, but I don't really like Blastoise or Wartortle very much.

Although I really liked Emboar, I was also really disappointed in him. He could have been much cooler than he ended being. Even had the potential to be my favorite starter.
