Mass Effect, in my eyes.
I have to agree. It didn't just have a good story, it has a fully fleshed out setting, and a completely defined universe. That's what I love in my games.
I am probably one of the select few people in the world with 1050/1050 for Mass Effect. I love that game.

New DLC is on the way :-D

Grim Fandango. Old and hard to find but sporting a story you can't beat and scenery that is creative and interesting. If any of you have played it then you know how awesome it is.

Ben Jordan, Case 4 has a very interesting story, and I found it to fit into the category of an "easy to figure out point-and-click game", rather than other games with incredibly obscure/near-impossible ways to complete puzzles (see The Dig)

Prince of Persia The Sands of Time for me, simply because its the only game I know thats got a love story right. In most games they're either annoying, soppy, unrealistic or just tagged on. Sands of Time works because it has two very believable and lovable characters, coupled with some excellent dialog and some genuinely laugh out loud moments that are sweet at the same time.

Its not a very "mature" story I suppose. I'd compare to something like Pirates of the Caribbean. Believable, funny, yet family friendly.

Also, Shadow of the Colossus.
I loved Shadow of the Colossus, but don't tell me "My girlfriend is dead. I'm off to kill some monsters" is a great story. Its a very romantic concept, yes, but not especially deep.

Bioshock, Mass Effect, Half-Life, Portal, Oblivion, and Fallout. I am not a big fan of JRPGs, but I thought Lost Odyssey had a very interesting story.

The game that really hit me with the story was the Witcher. The game was loooong, but they did with the story what I think all of the other games that pretend to offer choice were trying to do. You know the big choice in Mass Effect? Well in the Witcher, every decision you make results in unforeseen consequences, with lives on the line, and there is never a best option. The story was epic, because it put the player in situations with NO good choices, but you still had to pick one and live with the consequences.

Deus Ex. System Shock 2.

Seriously, if you have a discussion about this and don't include those games, you need to stop what you're doing immediately and acquire them.

Silent Hill 2 without question. It's the only game to have ever made me cry. The story and characters are better than most films I can think of.

I have to go with Fahrenheit. The story is original and makes sense, when you evolve in the game. You always keep saying "wtf is going to happen next and what does this have to do with anything" but later you say "aaaaaaaah now that is great."

I know, the game is kinda short but when it comes to story there are not much games that go beyond. It also makes you think about it, long after you finished the game, 'cuz it's very impressing and in some parts not far away from something that could really happen. (No I don't mean the supernatural parts but the rest.)

Edit: Heroes of Might and Magic had some pretty nice stories in the different campaigns too. Especially the 4th part is outstanding.

If I would have to tell my pick for the worst story (except fpr games like Sonic and Mario that don't need or have a story at all) I'd have to say Assasin's Creed. Gameplay, Sound and Graphics are good, but the story with the genetic memories and the parts of the game, when you are in the present (or should I say future?) absolutely kill the athmosphere. :(

I'm going to have to fourth the "Mass Effect" votes. The setting is so fully realized, it's shocking to learn that it's all for a game. And that ending with that final mission. SO EPIC. I love that game.

I also agree with Portal. Valve are the masters at telling stories "Between the lines". Hell, even in Left 4 Dead there are entire stories about people written in grafiti on walls in the safe houses. I'm not saying Left 4 Dead has a great story or anything, but there are micro stories that can leave you asking "who was that person? What happenend to them?" It's clever.

I'm going to get shot for this I know, but I'm going to say Morrowind. Not necessarily for the main story, but for the way that the world is fleshed out. If you don't believe me, go to one of the libraries and spend any length of time there. Someone spent a long time thinking that world out.

Honestly, I'm seeing some OK posts here story-wise, but seriously, SERIOUSLY. Like the best game ever for storyline (unfortunately, the writing can be cheesy) is hands down the original "Tales of Symphonia". That is also up there as one of my favorite games ever, if not only for the story, but also for the incredible gameplay.

The Elder Scrolls games have awesome backstory/lore. Some of the best.

And this time someone realy is going to shoot me. I like the Metal Gear/Metal Gear Solid storyline. OK, maybe it's complicated, but its just so... interesting.
