what is the best way to deal with trolls?

recently, i have pulled out of a different forum (namely gametechmods.com) because of the sheer volume of trolls throwing stupidity at me, so how do YOU deal with stuff like that? i want to be a noticed member there but a wall of idiocy blocks my way? how should it be dealt with?

Seriously though, if people ignore them then they pretty much lose all impact of what they're trying to do.

Best way with trolls is to leave them alone because your time is a valuable resource.

The most fun way to deal with trolls is by showing them that you don't take them seriously, so extremely short and direct posts that still picks on them only not with a rational argument, but rather something that says "you're not a real person".

For example if somebody is using CAPS on you, you'd say "That's cute, you really think your words can hurt me?"

This kind of attitude deters them sooner or later because it's not fun to troll someone if they are not taking it personally. Ah, will the lessons from the schoolyard ever stop being useful?

If you are smart enough, try out-trolling them, trolls can never handle what they say being thrown back at them. Failing to out-troll will only feed them though, and make you look like an idiot though.

OT: I hear there is a magical power. Not many people know about it, some refer to it as the block button, others call it an ignore list. But all the legends agree that it instantly causes trolls to vanish. :3

Read this wonderful thread [http://forums.gearboxsoftware.com/showthread.php?t=129323] asking the same question. It provides wonderful and thoughtful insight into the thinking process of the troll and ways to combat their excessive inability to communicate effectively and unprovocatively.

And yes, using all those long words in that sentence was purposeful.

I usually become very hard to understand when trolls come out to play.

I always feel sorry for those 3 billy goats when they encounter that troll but if they had just taken the scenic route all bother would have been avoided.

As for internet trolls.

Depends on the type.

If it's a funny one i'll sit and have a giggle. If it's an extremely obvious funny one yet people are taking it seriously i'll sit and laugh belly rumbling laughter at the fools (one thread on the WoW forums a bit back by a guy saying he had "beaten the game" it was hilarious and people raged at him, never laughed so much in my life).

If it's trying to hard to be funny and falling or completely obvious troll i'll move along, threads like that get boring fast.

If it's a subtle troll and people walk into it hook line and sinker I have a giggle.

The only problem is the funny and subtle trolls are few and far between and we get left with morons that try far too hard and fail miserably.

Just move along, there is nothing to see usually.
