KOTOR 2 had some pretty good writing all things considered, too bad the rest of the game was such a mixed bag.
KotOR 2 had some darn good writing and storytelling, but not nearly as good as KotOR 1.

That, and the Mass Effect games, imo.

I'm just gonna say baldurs gate or Icewind dale. Easy. Do i get a reward now?

Oh and maybe metal gear solid 1, because it has so good thriller and suspense not rivaled so much by the other mgs games. Maybe only at the end of metal gear 4 but it wasn't the writing per say.

Half-Life 1, well written, and it's sequel, and Portal.

Oh, Medal of Honor had it's moments when it stood out from the generic modern FPS's. And also MoH: Frontline was well told and easily a good contender for this.

The entire Metal Gear Solid series.

Hideo Kojima is a mad genius for somehow wrapping everything up so nicely in MGS4.

Indigo Prophecy (known as Fahrenheit in Europe). End of discussion.
Until the last 3rd of the game when they pull the last bit of the story out of their asses.

Lucas is all of a sudden undead, he can fly, he fights an ancient Mayan guy disguised as hobo in a midair Dragon Ball Z-esque fight. All while at the same time trying to save the world from AIs from the future? What the Hell?

I did enjoy the first 2/3 of the game, but right at the first mention of "ancient mayan prophecies" and whatnot it started falling apart. Plus what happened to the guy detective (Tyler? I think)? I chose for him to stay around but I still never saw him again. I liked him he was funny.

Oh well, at least Heavy Rain made up for it.

Well here's how it see it. KOTOR 1 might have been coherent, but with the Restoration Patch installed, the game explores alot of themes that aren't brought up very often in most Star Wars games. Don't get my wrong, the writing in the first one is top notch too.

Aye. Or at least that's the best I've come across.
I could start talking in superlativuses (I don't even know if that's the correct spelling), but there's no point. Get it, get a resolution fix, and enjoy the ride.

BioShock is the strongest answer to this question, IMO. No one can look at that game and say that it has no political/philosphical value whatsoever. And seeing as it draws heavily from Atlas Shrugged, if anyone did, they would wind up looking very foolish.

Shoot. That's a toss-up between Portal and Russian Attack. Or maybe FFVII and Super Mario Bros. I'm not necessarily trying to be a wiseass. Complex story vs just enough story. O.k. maybe i'm trying to be a wiseass juuuuuuust a little. My point remains valid!

Red Dead Redemption is very well-written, the characters have a surprising amount of depth to them. That or Tales of Vesperia for me; Tales had a great cast that was superbly fleshed out through all the dialogue and optional skits available.

Perhaps I should have added a no RPG rule, because the answers are always the same.
Oh defiantly; you're going to get a lot of Bioware games mentioned, though they are well written I'm very surprised people believe them to be "the best".

Final Fantasy 6, the whole thing was just a gigantic opera with a vast cast of characters that werent just a bunch of side characters that had their 2 seconds of fame, a well connected story and one of the best villians ever
