Zelda 2, easy. Yet it's actually my favourite in the series. I'd call Castlevania 2 a black sheep as well but, once the series hit SoTN, it actually ended up being an early glimpse at more of what the series would become later on.

Egoraptor (of "Awesome Series" fame) did a video on youtube comparing the first Castlevania to the second. It's pretty funny, and still manages to make good points. It's his first episode of Sequelitis, if you're interested.

OT: I enjoyed Phantasy Star C.A.R.D.S., even if it was pretty radically different from the rest of the PSO series.

Deus Ex: Invisible War, X-Com: Enforcer, Hearts of Iron III, and Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor all come to mind in this regard.

It's hardly a terrible game but FEAR 3 (I refuse to call it F.3.A.R) is a fairly disappointing game. It's still not a BAD game.
Eh. It was about what I was expecting; I managed to extract a lot of fun from it. A couple of the levels were quite a spectacle too.

Dawn of War:Soulstorm. Yeah it wasn't that bad but it was still the lowest point in the franchise.

Too many unwanted changes overcame and buried the potentially-glorious return to theme, leaving us series fans with a disquieting vision of Microsoft's plans for the future.

Well, there is Silent Hill 4, which didn't spend enough time in Silent Hill and had some serious gameplay issues. Its not going to be in the HD Collection.

And then there's Dragon Age 2. Poor Dragon Age 2...

Well, Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts comes to mind as a pretty freaking big change in the franchise, what with the complete doing away of traditional platforming for vehicle creation. That's not a good change. Not at all.

Devil May Cry 2.

Instead of being a wisecracking badass with a sense of humor Capcom turned Dante into an emo guy who doesn't say much and is in a perpetual state of angst (does this seem in any way familiar?). It did not go over well with fans of the original (again, familiar?), and they returned Dante to his original self in the 3rd game.

Probably not enough games to count a full franchise, but the first black sheep game that pops into my head would be Call of Juarez: The Cartel.

For me its games that deviate from their original style & generally become a mediocre shoot em up.

Metal gear 2: Snakes revenge on the NES. Good by stealth & tactical espianarge that made the original so, well, original. Hello mundane shoot em up just like the rest of them. Fortunately it was returned to its roots before it got lost down this path.

Any odd world game after Abes exodus. I havent played Munches oddyssey but I remember seeing an interview with the creator who said he wanted to make a game series that wasnt a shoot em but required puzzle & strategy. I believe its gone the way of first person shooters now, so sad.

And sadly I have to add to the list, my beloved Silent Hill series starting from Homecoming. Everyone would argue that Silent hill 4: The room is the black sheep but it was originally designed to be a completely different horror game & for some reason was converted to a silent hill title, but in all fairness I believe they did an awesome job by adapting the story line & tying it in as a spin off to SH2. Shame it didnt have the classic effect of the flashlight but it made up for it with the graphics, sound effects & music (Joe Romersa F*** Yeah!)

However, Homecoming gnaws away at my sanity & not in a good way that silent does. I mean it irritated me that the atmosphere was compromised to turn it into an action flick. That might work for Resident evil but not Silent Hill & by the looks of the sequel we can expect SH to be lost into obscurity down this path.
RIP authentic atmospheric Japanese horror. Hello mundane American survival horror action flick.*sad Sigh*

Halo Wars. Completely fucked over the timeline; the Flood were only discovered on Halo. Also RTS and that bullshit.

Since Devil May Cry 2 has already been mentioned, I am gonna go with Street Fighter Ex3. Some of the worst ideas ever in the franchise, including going 3D and not having Akuma. In addition, since the game sucked, some of the best chars in the series also got the shaft. I want Skullomania! But most of all, I need GARUDA!

I know I am throwing bones at Capcom for a new edition of SFIV but since I haven't bought past the first one, I don't care. Instead of this guy,

we got Hakan. Nice going.
