What is the deal with Gamerscore?

I've never met or heard of anyone boasting about their gamerscore, certainly not seriously, so why is it people take it as a massive problem? For me, and many others, it's just a nice way to reflect on past glories. Some how your victories are only truely validated when the console sits up and cheers for you.

I mean come on, they're harmless fun. I don't see why anyone feels the need to act as if they're the end of the world, or sneer about a problem which simply does not exist.

"can you do anything with it?"
*shrugs shoulders*
My E-Penis has 51506 points. I have to wrap it around my E-Leg and tuck it into my E-Sock.
I can do absolutely nothing with it, other than increase it bit by bit.
*swoons*
*WHOOSH!*

*SPLAT!*

...What? Over nine thousand points.

I have a friend who has ruined his life chasing after Gamer points in the last two years. He's had two different Xbox 360s and several accounts which have been banned from Live. Yet he can't stop.

It is quite true that achievements are very addictive, I've retrived my Windows Live Gamertag on to a friends XBox just so that I could get achievements for COD4 which the PC version neglects to include.

I agree with the person who said it was more a measure of free time and money.

i.e. to get 50,000 points (like someone on this thread) you need at least 50 games and 100% them

Different strokes for different folks. Some people love clocking up gamerpoints, some people don't care. Though to be honest I've never heard someone say that little achievement unlocked 'ding!' doesn't make them smile, or is somehow annoying.

Gamescores are primarily a dickwaving competition.

Although I've seen opinion on the escapist that it's also a sly device to get people to buy more games. With every game capped at 1000 points (or 1250 with DLC), after you've got all the achievements for all of your games, the only way to increase your gamerscore is to go and buy another game.
And that's the odd bit: are you buying the game as a game, or as a means to increase your gamerscore?

Its just fun to see a pointless number go up and think: "Mine is bigger than yours". Its just flashing your Edick. Also, its nice to get an achievement for beating a game that is really fucking hard.

It is also proof that you've done something your mates haven't... I bought Universe at War and The Club 'cause they were cheap and had points.

I'm just waiting to see Viva Pinata cheap :p

How do you think Sonic games are still selling?

Funny how the Escapist seems to care

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/xbox_live.php

Why does a competition (cuz that is all it is) have to be about the size of your "E-Penis"? Do some of you have some unresolved issues you would care to talk about?
