japan is pretty hard due to isolation and military capability.

WW2 ended as it did (with TWO nukes) because of how daunting and costly an invasion of the japan mainland would be. No one was willing to attempt it.

America is large and yet isolated from the rest of the world. the military is quite large as well.

Russia is large and its inhabitants are known well for their tenacity. additonally the winters there can be VERY harsh which adds a constant natural barrier to outside nations.

China is blocked on one side by one of the largest and highest mountain ranges in the world and has the largest population in the world.

these 4 are the most largly difficult to invade due to their individual diffrences. in general the larger an area the harder it is to cover and take control of it.

Hardest: Russia
The correct answer is madagascar. What's that? I'm thinking of the wrong game?

Yeah, probably Russia.

Sorry to say this American patriots, but China could come and take your country with relative ease. World War 3 is almost guaranteed to involve China as an aggressor. China has over 600million people, ready to take on the fight compared to USA's 140million. They could also choke the USA military's spending capailities by stopping to lend them ridiulous amounts of money.
There are so many things wrong with what you said:

1: The USA has a population of over 300 million, not 140 million.
2: The USA has the most technoligically advanced/largest navy in the world. And considering the fact that the only way to invade the US would be a coastal invasion, the Chinese would get blown out the water before the could even hit the coast
3: Numbers mean nothing against a technologically superior/better trained force look through history and you see countless times where a numerically superior army lost to a better trained/better equipped army.
4: Thanks to economic interdepedancy China's and the USA's economy rely on each other to prosper, if China chose the "choke" the US economy their economy would suffer too.
5: China the aggressors in WW3? Do you even know how modern politics work?

If capturing a country's capital counts as taking it over, then I would change the USA as the hardest. You only have to go a bit up the Chesapeake Bay to get to DC.
LOL you're forgetting the fact that the largest Naval base in the entire world is stationed right at the entrance of that bay in Norfolk.

Ireland =p primarily because the British still never really took the country. =p if someone wants to invade us they better be prepared for a rebellion every 2 3 years or so.

honestly Russia or UK. Russia has the numbers plus the country is a death trap in winter and the sheer amount of men they can bring to bear plus there technology is equal.
UK because its a fortified island and it has yet to be successfully invaded in the past 1000 years.

Australia will be the longest...you'll only kill an average of 1 person per square kilometre.

Might be pretty hard to invade too, only by planes and ships can you get into Australia

However, the bloodshed wont be very high, 22million Australians vs 300+million enemy troops. Guess who wins. (unless the Australian special forces win cos they ARE the best special forces troops in the world)

1: But not the largest army- which is what matters. Also- remember the US also has the highest obesity rate, etc- sure 300 million, how many are useful in an invasion situation? Not many. Remember Chine has one billion people- or about three times the US population. In terms of "invasion resistance"- when the US was still hyoung in 1814, the British sort of invaded. In practice, they marched from Canada, got to Washington, set fire to the Capitol building (causing it to be painted white to hide the scorch marks- hence "White House") and then left- with barely a shot fired. Basically, because every American that was in a position to resist chose not to.

2: Incording the chief of naval operations Gary Roughead, the US navy is reliant on international partnerships- i.e. allies. On thier own- he doesn't think the navy is as strong as you think it is.

3: Yes, but the US army hasn't won a war without allies since the 1790's. Vietnam? Loss. This "better equipped and better trained" force has never won a fight without friends.

4: Yes, but it would last longer than the USA's economy. Chinas economy would suffer, but it would survive. The USA's wouldn't (hell at the time of writing, it could become a serious cropper by the end of next week)

5: It'd never happen- if such a war were to occur no invasion would take place.

I don't know what country would be the hardest to invade, but I'm sure that the U.S is very very up there. It has a whopping 11 aircraft carriers and 10 amphibious assault ships (okay, maybe that isn't that good for defending) while the country with the 2nd most aircraft carriers is 2 (GB, Italy).

Costliest invasion (Measure of money lost from destroyed equipment)
Bloodiest invasion (Most casualties - casualties may be from the environment)
Longest Invasion (Invasion that takes the most hypothetical time)
Most difficult invasion.
costliest- Invasion of Contenental United States. any orginized invasion attempt must either have an entire navy group at their beck and call, or some heavy support in one of the neighboring countries. in any case, any sort of attack would be seen from miles away and sufficent responce would be mobilized to repel it.

throw in the simple fact that the US will have complete air dominance and a full arsonal of Intermediate range ballistic missles... sure it may not be the hardest invasion, but it sure as hell will be the most costly.

bloodiest- China. While the PLA may not be able to go out to sea and counter an enemy fleet nor are they equiped to properly repel invaders from a ground invasion, they can put more bodies in your way then any other nation in the world. Either you'll die from their volume of fire or your war machine will seize up from the number of bodies you try and grind through.

Longest- United Kingdom. with limited access points, the only way to truely invade the british isles is to pound it to near death before you put boots on the ground. and after two world wars, they have more then proven they are capable of lasting for a hellva long time.

hardest- China. what they lack in skill, equipment, or capability they make up for with just shear numbers. A war of Attrition alone would take longer then most nations would be willing to fight and the types of war china is willing to push is a lot farther then most nations are willing to go.

Russia in all the catogories. Its a huge nation with a lot of people. And you are on a timer as soon as you invade. If you don't take the nation by winter you are gonna lose a lotta men.

As many other people have said... Russia in all categories.

Reasons:

1) Its F-ing Huge!!!
2) The weather is terrible. Anyone not from Siberia would be far too busy shivering to worry about combat.
3) Urban fighting with Russia = Enormous casualties. See: Battle of Stalingrad.

Russia stopped Napolean and Hitler so... now that it has nuclear weapons, wouldn't it stop just about everything else?

Japan would also be hard to defeat due to tactical geniusness. I mean, they lost the war only because USA dropped two nukes on their heads...

Costliest invasion - Russia, way too big.
Bloodiest invasion - Japan, population concentration is huge.
Longest Invasion - Russia, since surviving General Winter is rather hard.
Most Difficult Invasion - Either one of the two above, or maybe China, maybe USA (see Fallout 3)

Definitely USA on all accounts. In 1995, the ATF said there was an estimated 223 million guns in America, and in 2003, the Census Bureau said there were 217.8 million people in America. If whomever is invading finally gets on shore, that is what they should be worried about, especially now that the assault rifle ban is over.

Come to think of it, the ol' Russian "retreat into our endless territory and let the weather do for them" tactic could work a treat in Australia too. Combine that with no land borders and I think Australia would give even a mighty army pause for thought.
I could see that working for Australia, for a bit anyways. They don't have nearly as much empty land mass as Russia.
