Id prefer that you diddnt say any games before playstation 1 era because most of thos were impossible anyways. Mine is currently Ninja gaiden Sigma or Ninja gaiden 2. Whoever thought automatic rocket launches that shoot in 30 round bursts or that all enemies carry explosive kunai in a game and thought that it whould be okay needs play his game nonstop on the hardest diffulculty for 1 year then shot in the balls then after a few agonizing minutes shot in the face.

Battletoads.
For old school games, yeah, that takes the cake.

The original Ninja Gaiden on hard mode, and the first FarCry on realistic mode.

Super Ghouls and Ghosts. It was particularly hard to resist the temptation to throw the controller through the TV when I got sent back to the first level.

STALKER

Seconded by Far Cry.

STALKER (and Clear Sky) had really intense fighting where you really had to work your ass off to survive. Far Cry went more for the smash-quickload-repeatedly approach, but it was still fair enough.

Yeah, STALKER definitely has a steep learning curve.

Battletoads and the learning curve for Stalker.

But at the same time, if you factor in learning curve, Anarchy Online, yes a MMO, had a ridiculous learning curve on top of a very elitest community, so that's is the hardest game I played. I did eventually become part of that community, but it took lots of out of game effort.

God Hand but then I've never been very good at the genre. It is however still fun despite, and possibly because, it kicks my ass so completely.

Homeworld 2 can be pretty absurd at times, but that is one of the reasons I love it. Some of my best RTS performances are during losses.
