I don't think that any game released in the past 10 years would qualify for this. Older games are so much harder and I doubt that many of today's gamers would take up the challenge.

Many hard NES games pop up to my mind and from the ones I've played more frequently, I'd say Contra or Castlevania. You know, many of those old games were actually quite short. Castlevania had like 6 levels only IIRC, but it took days to learn how to beat a level.
Ninja Gaiden anyone?
Ahh, I remember that one too. Ninja Gaiden actually tried to have a story in the game as well and it was quite fun. I don't recall it being overly difficult though.

I honestly don't see what's so hard about Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts. When I played it I died a couple of times at the start, but after the first level I set the difficulty to Professional. It didn't really take me that long to finish the game.

Ikaruga is only hard on Hard mode. The other modes are quite doable.

F-Zero GX Story mode is insane. I finished Normal mode and a couple of hard levels, but most of it is extremely hard.

There was a Beauty and The Beast Game that I had when I was really young for the Sega Genesis... I could never manage to get past the second level, haha, and I found it really hard, and I was good at games even back then...

Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link was a friggin hard game as well.

Megaman 2 on the snes I think....Airmans level kept me dying, and then dr Wily....
Devil May Cry 3 on the PC. The damn keyboard controls made it even harder.

worst till now... probably contra.

oh... and I was playing Loki last year and stopped playing because tiered of dying! Can't seem to handle the game controls and its lack of desire to keep attacking my targeted monster and walk around it instead.

Playing Dark Messiah (Of Might and Magic) Was pretty hard for me because I put hte difficulty on hard. That shit was gritty good fun but severely hard and at most times ridiculous, causing frustration

Streets of Rage, those 2 women outside the final boss' room were evil to beat even on the easiest setting
Really? I don't recall this being hard. When did you last play it?

Original Quesiton
Quake III:Revolution PS2 Nightmare (EDIT: it's not called Arena)
It's not the game it's the skill setting. I breezed through 4 levels of difficulty and then couldn't get off the first level - anyone done it? Did it get easier after the first level?

Not much of a curve - Fine. Fine. Fine. Fine. No.

It's a close call between Corperation on the Sega Megadrive (the controls were hard enough to figure out never mind the actual game) and Tunnel B1 (the number of enemies, hazards and explosions coupled with the extreme rarity of anything in the way of pick-ups that weren't flares made this game almost impossible).

Jet Set Willy 2 on the Sinclair ZX Spectrum.
20 years on I have it on a laptop at work, and it's still handing my ass back to me on a plate as a garnish for my eggs Bennedict every weekend.

I hate that bloody foot...
