The GC version of Ikaruga was pretty damned difficult, especially for someone who is in no way a veteran of shoot-em-ups. I only just managed to struggle through on the easiest difficulty after much practice and frustration. I can't imagine how long it takes the people who speedrun the thing without getting hit to perfect their skills.

Either Contra 3 and 4 (both are ridiculously hard), Alien Homonid (which is also really hard) or Grim Fandango. I find a lot of adventure games hard. Not because I need the skill to hit buttons with a speed that would normally tear your fingers apart, because figuring out that I was supposed to put balloons full of styrofoam into the mail machine isn't exactly intuitive.

i don't know if i'm the first to mention this but Friday the 13th on NES. it is difficult enough to beat Jason once, and maybe you can get lucky and beat him a second time, but a third? forget it. torch, pitchfork, doesn't matter. i couldn't even do it with snap saving on a rom every ten seconds.

(i did, however, as a frustrated adult, use a game genie for invincibility just to see what the ending was like - i'll just say that if i beat the game without cheating, there would be an article on the Escapist about a man who killed a set of game designers while wearing a hockey mask)

Ninja gaiden on the original xbox was deadly for me (although i was young) I couldn't even finish it, the odd thing is Ninja gaiden II was easy, I completed it in a day

EDIT: Response to lollipopz quote however it isn't here because Escapist was being weird and wouldn't put damn quote in.

Alright it wasn't so much hard as it was just damned annoying, really i don't play hard games that much because well... games like contra and such are only for those insane freaks who spend hours learning how to play DDR on ver hard.

Agreed! This is the perfect example of a game being impossible due crappy design. I don't know how many times I killed Jason's mom just to have him show up and 1 hit kill my ass.

Life

That's is the HARDEST game ever !!!!!!

i swaer there's no way of winning you either screw up or die

only reason people still play life is mainly because theirs always that small possibilty you win and reap all those amazing rewards

but that game is full of things that make you want to suicide

Taxes

Anoyying People

The evil Goverment

and sometimes lack of breeding

but you get the point life is a unfair game that can only be one by Luck (alot of Luck)

I'll say the same thing I did last "Hardest Game" thread, and the one before.

The hardest game I've ever played is Commandos, a strategy game for the PC. I'm not sure I ever made it past level 8...Not even halfway through.
holy god.. I remember that one now. I borrowed it off a friend and I gave it back to him like, the next day

Definitely I Wanna Be The Guy. I'm stuck on one part, and convinced I can continue if I get to this one place, but I know it's going to cock the whole thing up somehow.

...

But I wanna be the Guy. D:
