I just read Knots and Crosses by Ian Rankin. I thought it was fantastic, and kept me hooked through the whole thing.

The last book I actually finished was Storm of Swords part 2. What can I say? Finally decided to read the books after watching the show about two dozen times. Currently I am most of the way through the Quantum Thief by Hannu Rajaniemi. Cant say I recommend it. Its your typical 'hard' sci-fi debut. Very pretentious and trying too hard. Jesus, first few chapters are like smashing your face into a brick wall. 'I'm going to use a fuck load of sci-fi terms I just made up and not explain what any of them are! *intellectual snobbery*'

Once you get into it, the story isn't all that interesting either.

Game of thrones. Loved it, but I want to finish God Emperor of Dune before I get to Clash of Kings.

I just started Dune. It is excellent. I don't know why I didn't read it before now.

Before that I read The Primarchs, the latest in the Horus Heresy series. The Emperors Childeren continue to be twisted fucks, Ferrus Manus kicks some xeno ass, the Lion continues to be a douche and Omegon continues to be a magnificent scheming bastard.

I still have a massive backlog of 40k novels to read too, with more coming out in omnibus form soon.

I just finished reading "This Will Make You Smarter" edited by John Brockman. Basically it is a collection of short essays by a lot of different people where they give what they think would be an important addition to our own cognitive tools in order to see the world differently. It is really good if you are into non-fiction and quick ideas on how to view things differently. Right after finishing that I picked up 11/22/63 by Stephen King. Even though I don't read a lot of his work, he is so good at developing characters.

I recently finished 2001: A Space Odyssey. I can't believe I didn't read it years ago! It is a fantastic novel, one of the finest I've ever read.

I'm currently reading The Long Earth by Pratchett and Baxter and it's looking to be a corker as well.

I finished fires of heaven by robert jordan today. It was really good and I'm enjoying the wheel of time series (despite the fact that most of the main characters can be scheming douchebags at times). The only problem I have is that I want to look some things up online but since there are another 9 books in the series I can't search for the smallest hint of information for fear of getting spoiled.

I just finished the Plague by Albert Camus. It was okay. It's about a town that gets the... plague.

Mogworld - Yahtzee Croshaw

My god, I can't even begin to describe how good it was

It was just utterly hilarious, well written, pretty damn clever and really well drawn out. It was a brilliant book. And anybody who enjoy's Yahtzee's writing style and not read Mogworld yet, I strongly advise reading it. noaw.

A Storm of Swords - George R. R. Martin
Definitely my favourite book of the Song of Ice and Fire series so far and definitely one of the best-written books I've ever read. What set it apart from the other books, for me, was how well-paced it was. There were no "throwaway" chapters, no moments that halted the story's momentum. Every single chapter just kept building to a series of brilliant climaxes. I loved every minute of it, could not put the book down.

I recently finished reading Assassins Creed: The secret crusade.

And I thought it was pretty good, although Maria confused the fuck out of me sometimes, she's supposed to be a bad ass English women, but later on in the story she really didn't seem like it at all, and I can't fathom why.

Other than that it was good I thought, it was just nice to learn some more about Altair's story before and after the events of the game.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As a side note, would anyone recommend the next in the series?

Ghost Story by Jim Butcher.

I thought it was great. It had some really great moments, and some pretty jaw dropping moments for the over arching story.

I can't wait for Cold Days, the next book in the series.

On a side note... if I don't like a book... I don't finish it... so with a question like "What was the last book you finished and what did you think" the answer will never really be in the negative. Neutral maybe... but not the negative.

Edit:

"Pastures of Heaven" by Steinbeck.

I didn't enjoy it as much as "Travels with Charley", but it was a good read.

I just finished reading the last book of the Harry Potter series after re-reading it. But I also just finished a Dave Robicheaux novel. I like mature books but HP is good too:p

After a thread on here about 50 Shades of Gray, I decided to check it out and got through it in one day. It was absolutely terrible. It feels like it was written by a little girl. The main character Anastasia is possibly one of the worst protagonists I've ever read. Nothing makes her happy and she cannot seem to think for herself or really form a sentence. Also when she hears that Christian Gray was in a sexual relationship with his mothers friend at the age of 15, her only reaction is to be jealous of the woman, it's not until much later in the book that she finally questions the relationship. Also the romance feels fake and forced, all that "sexual tension" looks more like genuine fear, the relationship seems abusive rather than BDSM relationship. The plot and characters seem more or less copy and pasted from Twilight, and I have to say, Twilight was better than that crap. Also the sex scenes were poorly written, as was the whole book really, there were often mistakes made, the author would use the same descriptive word twice in one paragraph. Also the sex scenes are hardly erotic, the very first one refers to Gray's penis as a popsicle.

And for any of you still reading my rant, my final and my main gripe with the book is this: The author portrays BDSM as something mentally wrong. She makes it out as though it's something incredibly unhealthy and only brought on by mental trauma and an abusive childhood.

Wow sorry for the long rant everyone. I didn't expect too much from the book, but damn I did not expect it to be this poorly written, I was just genuinely curious what the commotion was all about. It took me a day to read, and while I know I could have closed the book at any point in time, I was told that it got better. It did not get better at all.
I think there's a lot we agree on, you and I.

That book is literally a converted Twilight fan fiction, if you were wondering why the plot is similar.

Mainly, I'm offended as a writer that it exists and is getting so much acclaim. Basically a giant middle finger to everyone who actually puts effort into their work.

The last book I finished was Guild Wars: Ghosts of Ascalon and I loved it.

I have the boxset of the first five of Ice and Fire books on pre-order from Amazon. Can't wait to get dug into those when they arrive in like, 10 days, I think they'll be now.

Ubik by Philip K Dick, my brain is still hurting from all the twisted weirdness in that book, but was damn fun to read. It also has one of the funniest passages of dialouge I have ever read, I won't spoil it but I will say it involves a door.

Do yourself a favor and dive face first into A Feast For Crows.

I'm going to let you know ahead of time, A Feast For Crows and A Dance With Dragons focus on different characters in parallel. Only the end few chapters of A Dance With Dragons actually take place chronologically after A Feast For Crows, as 'Crows characters start getting chapters again.

In any case, George RR Martin may be God.
