As I am about to start the seventh volume of 'Wheel of Time' I realized that once I finish the last book, it will be the longest book series I have completed in my life and that I will probalby never again commit to an equally long series.

This in turn made me wonder which other things in media took the most dedication in terms of time from my life (which I invite you to join):

Books
I'm not sure about their complete length, but it's either 'The Dark Tower' or 'Song of Ice and Fire'. Both stories I'll never forget.

TV show
At the moment it's a tie between 'Buffy', 'House M.D.' and 'Supernatural'. But once I complete season 8 of the latter, the Winchesters win. Funny, as the show wouldn't show up in my personal Top 10.

Animation/Anime
Yu Yu Hakusho's 112 episodes were more than enough for my taste. I would like to watch the complete Dragon Ball Z at one point, but I prefer shorter series with 12 to 30 episodes with a good storyline.

Games
I guess that would be 'Ratchet & Clank', though I definitely own more 'Final Fantasy' titles. I've played through every of Ratchet's games including the Spin offs, but havent's completed every FF I own.

Tv is easily going to be Doctor Who.

8 Seasons? Pft.

Also, 7 books in a series doesn't seem long either. Harry Potter was that long, most of us have read that.

Does that only count individual series, or other series written as sequels? Because then the Belgariad 5 and Mallorean 5 make 10, by Eddings plus 2 spin offs. Or the Prince of Amber 5 and the Merlin 5 by Zelazny. Vampire Academy 6 plus Bloodlines 6 is 12.

If you mean single series, I've read the first 8 Gaunt's Ghost books, and Double Eagle which may or may not count.

Animated...probably "Twins of Destiny". 52 episodes, one a week for a whole year.

That's an interesting question.

Books: Honor Harrington: 12 main books, plus the side stories, the Torch of Freedom sub-series, the Students of Honor sub-series, and Cauldron of Ghosts(the book that ties the main and sub-series books together.) Though it's still a series in progress.

TV: Live action? Star Trek TNG.

Movies: The Star Trek movies

Anime/Cartoon: Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z Kai for Anime, for Cartoons I've seen all of South Park to this point.

Games: The entire Metroid series, fallowed shortly by Fallout. (Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel and Metroid: Other M don't count, though I have played those piles of garbage.)

For television it depends. If it's strictly one series, then Stargate SG1 with its 10 seasons. If it's franchises then Star Trek with its 28 seasons over 5 series.

For books, it would have to be the XSGCOM. I know it's internet fanfiction, but the first is well over 300,000 words (or a trilogy of books) and the sequel is already book length and still ongoing (though it's been some time since it last updated).

Games goes to Fallout, not because of how long the games are per-say, but because of how much time I've wasted on them.

Animated is hard, as I watched the DC Animated Universe, but I also have watched things like Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and when I was growing up I watched Pokemon like everyone else.

I concur on the T.V. shows though Old Doctor Who is quite a slog if you ever try watching a large amount of it at once. Enjoyable but looooooooong.

As far as books go either War and Peace, the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, or the Amber Omnibus. Seriously, all ten Amber books in one huge book.

Video games is a bit up in the air. Are we talking longest time spent finishing a campaign or the longest time spent playing it? Longest campaign would be the Mobile Suit Saga. It took me about 70 hours to beat it and I lost interest in the expanded playthrough. Way to much grinding. As far as most time spent playing a game, that would be Dynasty Warriors 3/Extreme Legends. Dozens of characters, 5-10 hours to finish any given character's story mode once. Admittedly the battles get recycled but still that's a lot of time needed to do everything. Probably several hundred hours at this point.

Books: the Sharpe series by Bernard Cornwell, 21 novels and a few short stories (all read several times.)

TV: Grey's Anatomy, it's on season 11 now.

Games: Must be Civilization, played all 5 main games as well as the first Call to Power game (and Alpha Centauri, but I don't think that counts.)

Animation: No idea, maybe DCAU JLA/JLU if we combine those two series, or possibly something I saw as a kid.

I love those books, but I still haven't gotten past Sharpe's Rifles. As much a fantastic read as the Honor Harrington series I must say.

I have a short attention span, I got to book 4 of the wheel of time series, and only manage about 2 series of anything, even when I'm enjoying it. I don't even finish most video games.
I used to read a lot, but it's mostly stuff my mum owned, so everything David Eddings wrote, most of Dick Francis' books and most of Lee Child's Jack Reacher books, but nothing I've really commited to.

TV-
Friends. I have seen every episodes of it.

Hunter X Hunter. Granted this is the OLD version and NOT the newer version and this is including all the OVAs after the main series ended. Also yes I know the newer series still continue right after where the OVAs ended (which was not the end of the story) but I have lost interest with that franhise.

BatmanTAS. I watched every single episode and owned most of the dvds but in saying so I think it's kind of short compared to some animated series like isn't MLP:FiM has more episode than Batman:TAS?

Book- Harry Potter (I don't read that many books before you mention to me other longer book series).

Film- La vita è bella. Fucked that movie! No seriously! It was a total bore to the point it put me to sleep (ok technically I didn't complete it)!

Game- ??? If we were to go by game file timer, I think that could be Pokemon Diamond (when I did catch them all) or Dragon quest 9 cos I played every sidequests that was upload every week for a year!

Books: Either Count of Monte Christo or Hitch hikers Guide to the Galaxy, don't know which one is longer but both are over 1000 pages.

TV: Supernatural is now on season 10, I've watched the whole of Friends but Supernatural will soon surpass that.

Game: Legend of Zelda??

Except that The Wheel of Time is not 7 books, it's 14, and Harry Potter's longest book was about 750 pages, where the shortest book in WoT is about 680 pages, the longest being almost 1200. The Wheel of Time is by far the longest thing I've ever read. It took me 13 months to read the entire series back to back.

For TV, it's Star Trek. I have seen every episode of every show since TNG, and most of ToS.

And in video games, I have probably spent....carry the 1....800 hours? Across the many playthoughs of all 3 games.

Aw yeah, posting about the length of series I've read. As a longtime fantasy reader (with some sci-fi thrown in), my time time to shine has finally come.

Books:
Single series: The Wheel of Time. As was said earlier in the thread 14 books and I've read them all. Technically I've read 15 of them, since I've also read the prologue. I've read the series both in Dutch and English.
Franchise: Probably the books situated in Midkemia by Raymond E. Feist, the Riftwar Cycle. 30 books total and I've read them all.
Honourable mentions should be made for Sharpe, Honor Harrington, Belgariad and Malazan Book of the Fallen.

TV
Either Scrubs, M*A*S*H or Friends. I have seen al episodes of all of them.

Anime: Either One Piece or Naruto + Shippuuden, eventually One Piece will win since it is still on-going.

Movies: Probably the Fast & The Furious franchise, I've seen all of them and I can't really think of other long film series (I've stopped watching Harry Potter after The Order of the Phoenix)

Games: The Command & Conquer games. I only haven't played Sole Survivor (because it wasn't included in The First Decade) and Tiberian twilight (because it's a pile of shit)

Different number of books and different thickness so I don't exactly know which is longer.
Games:
Civilization/Settlers/Fallout series.
Movies:
Star Trek/Gate/Wars movies.
TV-Series:
Star Trek/Gate series.
Anime:
Naruto.
Music:
Pentatonix - Love Again on repeat, for a whole day..and the next.

(EDIT: I've re-read/watched/played all of them several times as well)

Doctor Who is the longest science fiction TV series in history. Seven Doctors in the old series, Peter Cushing AND Paul McGann in movies, one brilliant parody (Curse of Fatal Death) featuring Rowan Atkinson, and five more Doctors (including John Hurt) in the new series SO FAR. Guess what I watch.

As for books, I HAVE read nearly all of Discworld. I think that that counts right there. Maybe the Sword of Truth novels compare in overall size? I am not at all certain there.

Games? Hmmm. I have ALL the Persona games and Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, made by Atlus. Other Atlus fans will back me up: These games are LOOONG and DEEP. However, for sheer hours in a gaming series, I have to admit that Final Fantasy has pulled out ahead for now. Put simply, I've just played more of those than of Atlus games. Final Fantasy 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, (Regrettably), 9, 10, 13, and the first Tactics!

It took a long time!

Oh, and movies in a series? Hard to say. Six Star Wars movies (extended), eight Star Trek movies, A Harry Potter movie for every book plus when they needed to split it up, and then there's The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings which after extensions JUST MIGHT trump them all! ...but I cannot be certain.

If you want a music artist, I think right now it's a genuine toss-up between Yoko Kanno and Weird Al Yankovic.

When it comes to TV, I've been watching The Simpsons since before my memory fully formed. I came out (or rather, I was born) in 1988 so I kind of grew up with The Simpsons. Yes, I even watch new episodes. There's no other show that I've dedicated that much time to...However;

When it comes to anime, I've watched the entire Fist of the North Star series. I haven't watched the entirety of the second season but I have seen every episode of the first season, the abridged version (an 80 minute long movie I think), the 3-episode OVA which Gackt inserted himself into...yeah...I need to watch DD and, Series 2 but the first series is really long. It's Shonen Jump after all! I think it's a bit longer than DBZ but it's definitely longer than Yuyu Hakusho and the first 3 or 4 arcs of Bleach...if not the series...I need to do a bit of research (and complete Yuyu Hakusho)

When it comes to books, Harry Potter. I've read all 7 books yes but the thing is, I've read those books from C1-B1 to the final chapter of book 7 five times so far. I'm going through the Discworld series but I haven't read all of those yet...I don't think I've made it through half of Discworld...I'm almost done with The Truth but I'm not reading in order.

When it comes to gaming, Final Fantasy is the series I've probably played the most of.

Final Fantasy (NES, PSX, GBA)
Final Fantasy II (Famicom, PSP, GBA)
Final Fantasy III (DS)
Final Fantasy IV (GBA, PSX, SNES)
Final Fantasy V (PSX)
Final Fantasy VI (SNES, PSX)
Final Fantasy VII (PC, PSX)
Final Fantasy VIII (PC, PSX, PSN)
Final Fantasy IX (PSX, PSN)
Final Fantasy X (PS2, PS3)
Final Fantasy XII
Final Fantasy XIII
Theatrhtyhm: Final Fantasy
Theatrhtythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call
Dissidia: Final Fantasy
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII
Chocobo's Dungeon 2 (PSX)
Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
Final Fantasy Adventure
Final Fantasy Legends II

Wow...I've only beaten 18 of those eh? Well, I'm just got back into FFXII recently and I'm not having a bad time with it now that I'm back on track so maybe that'll be number 19. I also want to get back to FF3 on the DS...which reminds me; Yes, I have beaten those different variations on those different platforms! Fun fact, I've beaten FF9 more times than any other FF game (I've beaten it thrice) and I feel like I've beaten FFIV more often than twice...oh well. Another fun fact! Theatrhtythm 1 is a game that I've put 100 hours into. Theatrhtythm 2 is a game that I'm currently 30 - 35 hours into and while I've beaten the main game, I'm not at 100% completion quite yet. I may not put 100 hours into this one even though curtain call makes the original look like a demo...

Books: by book count Harry Potter, but by page count ASOIAF undoubtedly. Though does it techically qualify since it's still a work in progress?

TV: Okay, since you counted Supernatural as well, I'm going to say it too. I quit after season 8, after I realized it was never going to change, but always revert to the same status quo with the same characters doing the same things. Plus one episode towards the end of that season was so bad it tipped me over the edge.

Animation: Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherfood. I'm not one for watching shows that go on for dozens of episodes, but that one I watched happily all the way through. It strayed far enough from the most insufferable shounen cliches and had enough meaty themes to it that the sometimes over the top anime tendencies didn't cause me to leave it.

Games: I guess the Half-Life series counts if you think of both episodes as separate games. That makes 4, which is to my memory the largest number of installments I've finished out of a single franchise.

The longest film I've ever seen is La belle noiseuse ("The Beautiful Liar"), a French film that is almost 4 hours long (238 minutes) and which I enjoyed immensely, in no small measure because the divinely beautiful Emmanuelle Béart spends the majority of those 4 hours walking around stark naked.

As for "serialized" media...

TV: Seinfeld, I think. That's 9 seasons and I've seen every episode. I guess that's only rivalled by The Simpsons/Family Guy. I feel like I've seen most seasons, if not all of them, but couldn't exact how many.

Games: Tie between Silent Hill and Resident Evil. I've played Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3, Silent Hill 4: The Room, Silent Hill: Origins and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories; as well as Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil: Code Veronica X, Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6. So that's six games each series.

As for books, I'm not sure. I don't like serialized literature. Maybe the Tolkien mythos, if we're to take everything he wrote about Middle-Earth as a saga. In that case I've read The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Unfinished Tales, Giles the Farmer of Ham (was that Middle-Earth?) and no small amount of "unofficial" guides and such.

TV: "The Shield", and I think I watched the whole thing in about 1 month.

Books: Just like OP, a 'Song of Ice and Fire' and 'The Dark Tower' series.

Video games: The only ones I've come close on are the 'God of War' games, where I played through all 3 God of Wars, plus Ascension (but I never played the PSP ones), and Resident Evil, where I played through 1-6 (though admittedly I quit six shortly after finishing the Leon campaign), plus Code Veronica, but never played any of the others (operation raccoon city, revelations, the darkside chronicles, etc.)

DOCTOR WHO:
I've seen EVERY episode, that's still around, even if it's only the surviving audio to pictures from that episodes set.
PLUS all the movies, shorts, cartoons, etc.

O, and I've read MOST of the books and comics AND I've listen to a vast majority of the audio plays/dramas.

Ha. Same as you I'm on the 11th book on the Wheel of time. But other than that I think the Lord of the rings. I got to book 5 in Harry potter and just stopped caring.

Tv? I don't know Star Trek? Yeah Star Trek.

Video game? Ratchet & Clank I think.
