Starcraft or Twilight Imperium.
What? Starcraft has to be one of the most skillful and clever games of this time. :/

OT though: Probably either Monopoly or Risk since they're the most well known games that put people off board games in general for life, when there are some really good ones out there.
Surely you are kidding. Twilight Imperium blows it out of the water. The only reason TI is on my list is because of the massive amount of space it takes and prep time it has.

The best games of this time would be Arkham Horror, Carcassone, Fury of Dracula, and perhaps Pillars of the Earth.

I've yet to play TI myself, I'll have to try it now though; Carcassone I find too light for my tastes though I won't deny it's a good game. I have a hard time believing the games you listed are such great games due to the heavy theming and apparent western styling but perhaps I'm wrong.

There are so many good games out there, it's just sad that so many people play crap like Monopoly and are put off board games as a whole.

The most fun for me (and therefore, in my opinion, "the best") are probably Antike, Puerto Rico, Starcraft, Imperial and Brass.

Monopoly and, to a lesser extent, risk. Too damn long for casual games, and not enough depth to be hardcore.

If you like Starcraft and games like Risk or just games with HUGE strategy and such, then TI is right up your ally. Carcassone is light, but it is a good casual game when you really don't want to lug out the big stuff. As for the others, I suggest giving them a shot. Arkham Horror is a really awesome game but be warned that you lose more than win and it can be tricky. Fury of Dracula is also fun but REQUIRES 5 players, no more and no less.

I've never played (or heard of) Antike or Imperial and Brass. What are they like? I hate Puerto Rico, and we already know my position on Starcraft. :D

Another really good title to consider is Acquire. My gaming group just picked it up and it has been a lot of fun. Shogun is another good title. Also Betrayal at House on the Hill (probably one of my favs).

I agree though, there are a LOT of excellent board games out there beyond the Milton Bradly line.

Other than that The Bioncle board game,it makes no sense to me and is fairly boring.
I had that game. I never played it. I spent hours just trying to set it up, and when I was done I put it away and never looked at it again... which ironically, is what I do with actual Bionicles. I guess they captured the spirits of Bionicles in a weird way..

Monopoly I have NEVER finished a game of Monopoly
This. Every game ends up with either people having to leave, people getting bored, or people getting pissed off and not wanting to keep playing.

Only reason i played it was to kill time during the blackout last September from hurricane Ike, this event also reveled that both me and my friend suck at Monopoly

Dungeons and Dragons can last for weeks or even months depending on addiction. But I don't think it's irritating or useless because people actually play it and helped inspire alot of modern day rpgs.

Monopoly. I have not finished a game without one of us having to bury a corpse at the end of the night.

THUD: Finding a copy is damn near impossible.

I like Monopoly, but all it takes is one person to ruin it by never trading, even when it's beneficial to them.
