What that whole guess what the Vault really is a lie thing bugged you? (mean spirited joke) I felt like the game was laughing at me.

The ending to Twilight princess really bugged me because they really cared about each other in the end.

Borderlands was more about the kourney. which was damn awesome. Sure, the vault was just the 'cake' ... with tentacles ... and the ability to fire lazers and eat worlds ... yeah.

Personally for me, it was the Dragon Age 2 ending. The journey was awful, and the ending didn't do any justice to anything. Compared to ME2 which had a great flow with the story despite having a similar ending was a much more interesting cliffhanger, I just felt empty inside with DA2.

Fallout 3's pre-broken steel ending, with power armour and rad-x the radiation in that damned chamber was far from lethal (2 rads per second if I remember correctly), you expect me to believe that the fucking radiation of all things killed me? I know this was meant to be a big martyr and all but this kind of drama only works when you know the death is really necessary... and come to think of it, this was a water purifier where in the name of God did that amount radiation come from? Did they decontaminate the water with fucking uranium?
This one.

The endings in Marvel vs. Capcom 3. I thought they'd be a little more interlocking and and well written, but they were just...ugh.

There are many endings I hate, but none more than the one for Jodi Picoult's 'My Sister's Keeper'.

I'll try not to spoil too much; it comes from nowhere, it completely changes everything for the worse and, the most bitter pill to swallow, it makes the efforts of a certain character completely pointless.

I have fury for that ending. Much deadly fury.

If you think you can guess what happens, you are mistaken. It's that random.

Borderlands takes the cake for all bad videogame endings, that much is universal knowledge. As for movie endings, I honestly can't think of any film that ended badly that already didn't suck.

Wow. I kind of loved the ending, didn't know there was so much negativity behind it. I got ask, why? I'm not trying to say "you're wrong!" or anything, I'm just curious.
It's not that I didn't like it...it's just that it all happened a bit too quickly for my liking, if you know what I mean.

All the stuff involving the Suburban Redevelopment Fund was dragged out a bit too long for my liking and some of the people involved with it got away with it too! Justice wasn't served, that's what annoyed me. Surely the exploitation of everyone on the SRF would have done the trick?

In all of these bad ending, something happens. Maybe they are bad endings, irritating, lazy etc, but something happens that changes the world, the characters, something. In PoP, the cumulative reward for every last shred of effort is absolutely nothing. You literally undo all the things you did during the course of the entire damn game. From a storyline perspective, if the Prince just sat in the sand for the entire period of the game play, a sequel would be on the exact same footing as if you played the game. And worst of all, the response to the game seems to be that there won't be a sequel to introduce anything relevant happening in the storyline.
Well, to be fair, you don't actually have to do it. I just stopped playing.

Noir books and films never end well. The main character almost always dies and justice is never served. You're meant to love to hate noir for that very reason. I'm pretty sure everyone was meant to scream at the game when Roy spoke at your funeral.

The ending we were left with the tv series 'Reaper'. It's always disapointing when a series you like is cancelled before any real resolution, but it's a goddamn disgrace when it's a good series, and the season finale hinted at numerous interesting plot developments that would've raised the series to one of my favourites.

Most cliffhangers piss me off, esp. when they're never picked up on and properly concluded. I'm looking at you ReBoot.

The fifth ending for the first Drakengard game, it was a seriously "What in the flying fuck!?"

It didn't mesh with the game at all, and the final boss that route was a pain in the ass to beat on top of it.
Is that the one where *spoilerA* is eaten by *spoilerB* and you have to kill *spoilerB*? That ending made me sad, I loved *spoilerB* plus yeah, was a ***** and a half to kill.

Yeah didn't make much sense, still epic ending though. Loved that game, I demand a new gen sequel!
No it's the one where:

You get transported to modern day Tokyo and have to fight a giant, pregnant demon, then after you do an annoying rhythm based boss fight you get shot down by fighter jets.

I agree with other people who have mentioned L.A. Noire (which didn't have the WORST ending in the world, but it's likely still fresh in everyone's minds). It wasn't awful, but it definitely seemed rushed and...pointless, I guess. It was sad, but rang hollow.
Specifically, Cole's death seemed pointless. Why? What was the need? And that stupid funeral...

Can't think of any books or films in particular, but I know that the worst ending I've ever received in a game is BioShock. I got the good ending, and it was the most abrupt, slapped-together, nonsensical conclusion I've ever come across. It's a shame, because apart from the last few sections, I love that game.

Some of the video game endings described in the thread have been criticised for not allowing the player to "win", e.g Fallout 3 and Dragon Age 2.

Just as a general question: are you predisposed to dislike an ending if it involves the death or disempowerment of your character?

This isn't intended to come off as snide or anything like that, I am genuinely interested.
It's an interesting question.
Planescape: Torment ends with the main character dying
and that's considered one of the best video game stories of all time. Dragon Age: Origins can also end with the heroic death of the main character. I think it might just be a question of whether the downbeat ending is the result of a reasonable choice by the main character, or simply the main character's own stupidity (see also: Fallout 3).

Borderlands ending was infuriating.

When I killed the final boss, I thought I'd killed the guardian of the Vault, and then I would get to go in and reap the rewards. But I was wrong. The monster, which had no build-up, no explanation, and wasn't even a hard fight, was the contents of the vault. And to add insult to injury, since half the fun of that game was finding better and better loot, not actually getting anything from the final fight was a massive dissapointment.

Also, as people have said, the end of the last Half-Life episode, if only because they pretty much forgot about Half-Life after ending it on a ridiculous cliff hanger.

When a better alternative to an existing ending of a storyline is to simply avoid the entire story in the first place, I think you win the title of, "Most irritating ending ever".

Really guys? We've gone this far into the thread without a single mention of the Sopranos? It was so frustrating that they made a parody of it on Family guy, where they finished the episode mid-sentence. Note that it isn't a BAD ending, but it is really the most irritating thing I can think of. Seriously, imagine if I just finished this repl
Frustraiting, perhaps, bad, NO!

It had Tony constantly looking over his should, scarred by what may come through the door. The last words from that shitty Journey song in the episode were "Don't Stop," because for Tony, it'll never end.

That movie "Remember When?" talk about bad endings.
You just got 9/11'ed

The ending to the book "Dirk Gently's Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul". It might be I stopped paying attention but I had the no idea what happened. It was a mess of norse gods and time travel. This is strange because I love Douglas Adams normally.

On the film front it would be "War of the Worlds" that ending was abrupt and ridiculous.
