If a game has a modding tool coming with it, i always check out it's forum. Just to see what people are making with it or lending a hand if i like the game enough as well.
Just check out Bethesda's Oblivion forums for an example, mods are still being made for that and posted (offsite but still) Not to mention it's also a great community builder that way

People love nothing more than to speculate endlessly amongst themselves. It's remarkable how easily they fall into groupthink. I'm just here hoping to retrieve my illudium Q-36 explosive space modulator.

I'm really not sure what the point is not. It's a forum on the site of a gaming magazine to discuss anything in relation to games, the gaming industry, and all things gaming-related. Maybe the better question is 'Why is there a religion and politics forum here?', since those seem slightly more out of place.

I trust gaming forum game reviews more than official reviews. Here I can find all the bad points of a game.

The same as any other forum I guess, same reason why there are gardening forums or music forums. People like discussing stuff on the internet... more often bitching about it but still.... and it's better to do that with people who share the same interests as you and therefore you overtime develop a liking for it.
In some respects sites like the Escapist operate as a community, it doesn't always get along but generally there's a friendly atmosphere here and it's fun to just have crazy conversations with people.

Also, I do still believe that with all the time and effort that it takes to make really great games, I'd still call them art.
