Why in games, MMO's specifically, do people feel the need to create alternitive accounts. I can understand it if the game has seperate class like FF XI, but lets say it's a game like Runescape(it's just an example) where you can do everything. Why would you create an alternitive in this, wouldn't you just want to focus on having one account great at everything, instead of having a pure, a skiller and what ever else.

I assume (I don't play MMO's):

- Some people get bored of their online names easily.
- Some enjoy starting from the beginning and working their way up.
- Some like to stay anonymous.

Well on RS people made pures to do PKing and staking, which main accounts normally fail at. I never understood skillers though as main accounts can do that.

People make alts for a fair few reason, most comman can be simply for storage or just because they're bored of their mains.

Starting over after you know whats what can be fun, also it is interesting to see what happens. Also underhanded reasons people do it.

I play WoW and I have very few of what you could call alts(4 level 5s,not really).
I have more alts in Fallout 3 than I do in an MMO,try out different play styles but yea Runescape is certainingly a weird one since you can change class easily by leveling up the skills(and eeven than the old main class will still be fine).

Edit,misunderstanding
Accounts? no idea,at all.

- Most MMORPGs have multiple classes, people like trying out new things every now and then.

That's sort of like saying "I already have Halo 3, why would I want Halo 2 or 1?"
...How?

On Topic, I make alts when I get bored of my main character or when I want to see the game from another side. Sometimes, it just comes down to getting bored of staring at the same thing for days on end.

Well after months of playing the same exact person you need a break. you need something new something fresh to start playing with. that is why i make alts on World Of WarCraft. because when i get tried of playing as my lvl 80 Dwarf hunter i need to sometimes go back to the good old days of when i was still questing in Dun Morogh.

I personally do it because I like to know how all the classes work. Plus it's just not as fun (for me anyways) to run and gun as fast as you can to the cap. Just to sit there twiddling your thumbs until an update. I have no driving need to be uber.

Cause most mmo's ppl liek to change classes or do something different, especailly if you've been at them for some time. As for two or even 3,4 accounts well that's pretty much a no brainer. PL yourself, or for a greater chance at rare loot by running mulitiple toons at the same time. Even if u only play one and the others spam buffs or debuffs. In some circumstances they also can be used to trade between characters because by some means you can't set it up with a single account.

Me personally have never had more then one account in any mmo that i've been apart of. But this is why people do it.

Wow: To try a new class, meelee to caster/ranged
RS: Starting over, replaying quests, pure characters
And those are the reasons that will fit for most of the MMO's today.

I thought we were going to talk about the Alt keys. . .

They make other characters to play as other classes, races, or factions.

Well in EVE your main is usually a PVP character and the Alt is the carebear money maker to fund your ship losses.

Well in Eve Online you can have different characters dedicated to different things. Your main character would be your fighter and stuff. You could have an alt for stocks and making money on the market, maybe one dedicated to running a station or that alt has the skills for creatign stuff. In Eve its not smart to put all your eggs in one basket because if your basket gets blasted you have no eggs.
