I have never smoked, nor do I plan to, so I can't wrap my head around why anyone would want to. I can understand doing because you're addicted to it, but why would you subject yourself to all the toxins to begin with? The only reason that I can think of to pick up smoking is to make you feel cool.

I've been trying to find out why people do this when I realized I have a forum full of people who smoke! So Escapist, is the only reason to start smoking "Because all the cool kids are doing it"?

I hate smoking, but asking what the purpose of it is? What is the purpose of many things other than to enjoy it.

It helps people de-stress. It's also great for people with a death wish. :p

I believe that people do it to either relieve stress or to feel better.
They get addicted to it because they can't cope with feeling worse than they did when they were smoking.
I'm just guessing because I don't smoke, drink alcohol or do drugs myself.

A whole lotta guesses and haters ITT.

I don't smoke tobacco, but I imbibe the category mysteriously marked 'other' to help me sleep, and to relax. It also makes stuff fun. So there's that.

It relieves stress. It also calms your nerves. Your hands are actually steadier if you smoke a cigarette beforehand.

Also, it's legal. Holy shit, right?

It's kind of like asking "why do people like eating cheeseburgers?"

They like it, so they continue to do it, even if it isn't great for them.

Incidentally, I don't smoke or eat cheeseburgers. Go figure.

I say smoke if you wanna smoke... free will and all that stuff...
Almost all my friends smoke and it seems to calm them down a bit when they are stressed...
I don't smoke myslef though but the odd time I do inhale tobacco smoke (I won't indulge why that is) I do feel a bit of a nicotine buzz, But I imagine that goes away pretty fast if you actually smoke.

Also, I think "Because all the cool kids are doing it" is probably the reason most people start.

I used to do it because it was a great stress relief for the days I'd have to sit in a chair for 4-6 hours at work. It also broke up the monotony.

Thankfully I quit a while ago.

Because I find it to have a nice smell and taste but most of all, the action of smoking really calms me down. Those are the perfectly understandable reasons that people need to understand instead of demonising it as the government clearly wants.

It makes you look cool. if you do it right.

More importantly, it makes you feel cool.

Plus, for those of us who are too cowardly to kill ourselves in any kind of direct manner, smoking offers pretty great odds of doing it for you.

The only person who could ever make smoking look cool is Lemmy.

But he's the only one.
