Sucking the life out of people in exchange for cheap addictive pleasure, like Deathsticks in the Star Wars universe. It's absolutely pointless.

I have never smoked, nor do I plan to, so I can't wrap my head around why anyone would want to. I can understand doing because you're addicted to it, but why would you subject yourself to all the toxins to begin with? The only reason that I can think of to pick up smoking is to make you feel cool.

I've been trying to find out why people do this when I realized I have a forum full of people who smoke! So Escapist, is the only reason to start smoking "Because all the cool kids are doing it"?
All right, here's a smoker answering that question! All right, first, I understood the risks going in. My dad was a nurse (haha, very funny. Shut up, he makes pretty good $, enough that he lives in a nice 2 story house, etc...anyways...) at an old folks home and brought me with him to work one day...I think he needed to get some papers and was trying to get me into medicine. Instead, I saw some of those people and felt so sad for them. I mean, some were staring out the window, seemingly forgotten by their family, hoping that death hadn't forgotten them as well...wow, that was kinda poetic. (If you have a friend or family in a nursing home, go visit them. You're life is NOT too busy, I mean, hell...you have time for Forums!) Anyways, I didn't want to get that old and become like that. That's basically why I started...kinda ironic if you think about it.
All right, um, yeah, the addictions a pain sometimes. I mean, there are things that are worse though and sheer will power and determination can get you through it (I've quit before and started back up). I don't really see it as being "cool". I mean, I lived in a place where you could get a ticket for smoking within 15 feet of any door (including a closed fire exit) to a business...and that meant dealing with the freezing cold wind and snow. Also, how would you prove that you were actually outside of that 15 foot radius if you tried to fight the ticket? You would have trouble defending that ticket. Oh, did I mention the d*mn record breaking Ice storm we had a few years back (Hardin County, KY)? NOT FUN or cool...plus there's the teeth stains, odor, increasing cost (stop raising the taxes already, I'll pay for the smoking-related diseases I get, okay?) etc. So, no, I don't see it as the "cool thing to do". People smoke because it raises the chemical of pleasure (seratonin, I believe) in your brain and makes you feel happy. That kinda explains why people trying to quit are so grumpy, their chemicals are used to this boost, don't get it, so they get all out of whack. I've taken up too much room now *lights cigarette*. Laterz!
Oh, just so you know, I don't smoke around my baby and, I get really clean before going back around her.
Sorry, one last thing, have you checked out the smoker vs obese thread?

People who smoke cigarettes are idiots, you smoke things to get high, but most people that I know who smoke don't get high at all. If you're going to smoke, at least smoke the good stuff. That being the case, habitual smokers are still idiots because they are killing themselves. Sure it could be to de-stress, but won't you be twice as stressed when you find out you have holes in your lungs or lung cancer etc. etc.?
Since you just directly called me and several other people here an idiot, I feel compelled to reply. We've got a limited sneeze of time on this Earth - and I happened to find I wanted to try as many things as possible, and smoking (including cigarettes, roll ups, cigars, spliffs, blunts, pipes and hookahs) was one of the ones that stuck. And my justification? I don't need one because it's no-one's bloody business except my own, but if pressed I'd say 'cause I find it awesome.'

I don't know why 'hating on smokers' seems to be so in vogue at the moment on this forum, but I'm getting really sick of this. Just because smokers have a harmful habit, doesn't mean you can go around calling them idiots - people don't become moronic the minute they light a cigarette. I'm gonna go ahead and refer you to Dr Bill Hicks on this matter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9ySCcnoo3c
Well said man. Also, (I'm a smoker as well), I find it comically ironic that you said you're "getting sick of this"...just thought that was amusing.

I know someone who doesn't smoke, but plans to take it up in the future because he thinks it looks cool, and he likes the smell.

That said, he also wants to be an alcoholic, so go figure.

To get high.

That's what nicotine does. It gets you high. Not as obvious and massively as other drugs, but it gets you high. I rather not inhale crap like tar and cyanide to get high, so I'll never smoke anything.

Smoking is also often used as an aid to socialising as it can allow for an instant common ground or can punctuate silences.
"Heej you smoke!" "Yeah so do I!" *silence, both inhale from their sig* "Soooo..."
In other words; you'll have to explain that one. Sounds rather far-fetched.

Got a light mate? has been the start of many a conversation for me.
Nope, he's absolutely correct here. I remember once being in a train station and sneaking off for a crafty roll-up. I look round and hey! I'm not the only one who found this hiding place! There's another guy there too, who offers me a light. Just then the 'no smoking on platforms' announcement was made on the tannoy. Me and that guy were instant buddies in seconds.

I should point out this was in my teenage years =) I no longer do anti social things like smoke on station platforms.

Please, take note that I said you should smoke something to get high, and since regular cigarettes do not get you a real high, then I do not see a purpose in smoking them. Blunts and all that other stuff that DOES get you high is more understandable, although I do not condone it for fear of being put on probation or some other moderator action.
