All right, here's a smoker answering that question! All right, first, I understood the risks going in. My dad was a nurse (haha, very funny. Shut up, he makes pretty good $, enough that he lives in a nice 2 story house, etc...anyways...) at an old folks home and brought me with him to work one day...I think he needed to get some papers and was trying to get me into medicine. Instead, I saw some of those people and felt so sad for them. I mean, some were staring out the window, seemingly forgotten by their family, hoping that death hadn't forgotten them as well...wow, that was kinda poetic. (If you have a friend or family in a nursing home, go visit them. You're life is NOT too busy, I mean, hell...you have time for Forums!) Anyways, I didn't want to get that old and become like that. That's basically why I started...kinda ironic if you think about it.Snarky Username said:I have never smoked, nor do I plan to, so I can't wrap my head around why anyone would want to. I can understand doing because you're addicted to it, but why would you subject yourself to all the toxins to begin with? The only reason that I can think of to pick up smoking is to make you feel cool.
I've been trying to find out why people do this when I realized I have a forum full of people who smoke! So Escapist, is the only reason to start smoking "Because all the cool kids are doing it"?
Well said man. Also, (I'm a smoker as well), I find it comically ironic that you said you're "getting sick of this"...just thought that was amusing.Lasair said:Since you just directly called me and several other people here an idiot, I feel compelled to reply. We've got a limited sneeze of time on this Earth - and I happened to find I wanted to try as many things as possible, and smoking (including cigarettes, roll ups, cigars, spliffs, blunts, pipes and hookahs) was one of the ones that stuck. And my justification? I don't need one because it's no-one's bloody business except my own, but if pressed I'd say 'cause I find it awesome.'xXAsherahXx said:People who smoke cigarettes are idiots, you smoke things to get high, but most people that I know who smoke don't get high at all. If you're going to smoke, at least smoke the good stuff. That being the case, habitual smokers are still idiots because they are killing themselves. Sure it could be to de-stress, but won't you be twice as stressed when you find out you have holes in your lungs or lung cancer etc. etc.?
I don't know why 'hating on smokers' seems to be so in vogue at the moment on this forum, but I'm getting really sick of this. Just because smokers have a harmful habit, doesn't mean you can go around calling them idiots - people don't become moronic the minute they light a cigarette. I'm gonna go ahead and refer you to Dr Bill Hicks on this matter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9ySCcnoo3c

"Heej you smoke!" "Yeah so do I!" *silence, both inhale from their sig* "Soooo..."captainfluoxetine said:Smoking is also often used as an aid to socialising as it can allow for an instant common ground or can punctuate silences.
Nope, he's absolutely correct here. I remember once being in a train station and sneaking off for a crafty roll-up. I look round and hey! I'm not the only one who found this hiding place! There's another guy there too, who offers me a light. Just then the 'no smoking on platforms' announcement was made on the tannoy. Me and that guy were instant buddies in seconds.captainfluoxetine said:Got a light mate? has been the start of many a conversation for me.
Please, take note that I said you should smoke something to get high, and since regular cigarettes do not get you a real high, then I do not see a purpose in smoking them. Blunts and all that other stuff that DOES get you high is more understandable, although I do not condone it for fear of being put on probation or some other moderator action.Lasair said:Since you just directly called me and several other people here an idiot, I feel compelled to reply.
