I haven't played any 'proper' survival horror games, but I've played enough of Half-Life 2 to know that We Don't Go to Ravenholm.

No shame in that; the Abe games were very creepy. When I was 10 I played half a level of Abe: Oddysey, then I had to put it down because it creeped me out.

The game that made my skin crawl the most and check all the closets before going to bed (with all the lights on) was System Shock 2. I first played it a late night when I was home alone and had my headphones cranked to 11. The sound design in that game is brilliant and creates an atmosphere where the 2-polygon monsters are actually really effin' scary. Or maybe I'm just a wuss. ^_^

Silent Hill 3.

WAIT! Before you fill my lughole with SH2, I have yet to play that game.

But out of all my games, this one disrupts my sleep cycle the worst.

Dead rising. It wasn't necessarily a horror game but after watching the intro to and versing the clown I shut the game off. I haven't played it in a LOOONG time (Keeping in my mind that clowns give me the willies *For want of a better word*) As you can see I don't play many horror games, mainly because I'm jumpy as hell and have a wild imagination.

Silent Hill 1 & 2, some of the scariest experiences I've had from any type of entertainment, not just gaming.

Silent Hill 2: It had so many moments that made me grip my controller just a little too hard and think "oh jesus".

Examples:
Right when you start, and you're walking down that misty path, you can hear heavy breathing and running footsteps every now and then

Pyramid Head's signature "screeeeeeech"

When you're in the prison and the room with the gallows, you can hear someone running around the room, and your flashlight can never penetrate the gloom

Fatal Frame 2 scared me beginning to end. One perfect moment: I have a habit of whipping up the camera and doing a 360 to see what's all around me. Don't know why. Once, I did this while outside... camera goes up, good, quick 180, nothing there, another quick 180 and there is a ghost so fucking close to me that I can count the deep scars in his forehead, his mouth open. I swear to God that I threw the controller so hard and nearly shat my pants. Jesus Christ.

Fatal Frame 3/Silent Hill 4 - Neither was terribly scary on its own merits, but the times that you go back into the house/apartment and find it slowly becoming more and more haunted really mess with me. Like in Fatal Frame 3:

The ghost grandma, cruising down the bathroom hallway while you look in the mirror

The ghost under the stairs - the camera angle changes to a side-view of the stairs and look, there are legs underneath the curtain that covers the stairwell alcove JESUS CHRIST WHAT

Or in Silent Hill 4:

Came to and could hear a muffled, murmuring voice in the apartment. Checked everything - stereo, television, windows, fridge (remember the kitty), nothing. Laundry room, nothing. Bathroom, nothing. Back to the bedroom, opened up the closet.... and there it was, a small tape recorder or something, repeating in a very monotone voice "I'm always watching you. I'm... always watching you."

The original Clock Tower on SNES. It looked primitive, but the atmosphere was so solid that I began to just freak out during it. And hiding from Scissorman while he hunts for you? Genius. That game is a true classic.

And finally, Silent Hill Homecoming. I know, I know, that game was shit, but there was one moment that scared the ever-loving piss out of me. I had just cleared a small building of a couple of monsters and went into a room in the back of a long hallway. After a lengthy cutscene, I left the building, went left down the hallway, throwing caution to the wind because I'd just ventilated or beat the shit out of all the bad guys here, and nearly shit myself as I noticed three nurses just standing in that hallway I had JUST CLEARED, completely motionless, doing their thing. I scrambled for the flashlight button while my heart was hammering out a double-kick solo, and then had to try and sneak through them while they were twitching and scaring the living crap out of me. My heart was in my throat the whole time, and damn it felt good.

There are more, of course, but those three have pretty much psychologically damaged me. I actually and no exaggeration have nightmares about the Fatal Frame 2 incident.

Fatal Frame, both of them actually.
Fatal Frame.. That's Project Zero in PAL, isn't it?
And for me, it would have to be Aliens Vs Predator 2, playing as the marine. Only game to truly creep me out. Can't wait for Colonial Marines.
hate to break it to you...but i believe the game has been canceled.

as for scariest game...i found FEAR unnerving. Something about reality bending unstoppable girls...

I never played most of the games mentioned. But for me it would have to be any Aliens game featuring the motion detector. You can't see them, you can't hear them, but you know they're getting closer, and closer, and CLOSER!
