My favorite conspiracy theory is one I heard about 15 years ago.

Magic Johnson isn't really HIV-positive. My guess is that he was paid off by AmFAR or other AIDS charities something on the order of eight figures (at a time when an NBA player's salary---even a great one like Johnson---wasn't over $3 million). They knew they'd get it all back and then some from all the donations that would roll in having Magic as national HIV spokesman, which was part of the deal.

Think about it. Magic's wife and children are HIV-negative, and you'd certainly think that in the time between when he contracted the virus and when he tested positive he'd had unprotected sex with his wife dozens of times (possibly including when his wife was pregnant---or even when he got his wife pregnant.) Johnson has used the word "cure" to describe how the cocktail of drugs got the virus in his system below testable levels---is/was he somehow hoping people would forget about it?

The turning point for HIV/AIDS being taken seriously was when Magic announced he had it---it could no longer be dismissed as "the gay disease" or "the drug addict disease". Was there a more sinister political agenda at work there?

---------------

The whole point of this conspiracy? It was a thought experiment I cooked up about human gullibility. Anyone in high school I told the theory to didn't disappoint my cynicism. They thought it was perfectly plausible until the reveal at the end where I said "You know the most damaging part of this whole story? I made it up. Pulled it completely out of my ass to see what people would be willing to believe."

And please believe me when I say that while the United States has some stupid people, not all of us are THIS stupid...
Wow... Just wow. That woman is truly the most retarded person I have EVER seen.
I don't have any sort of sound or anything, so I can't watch the video. Could you guys inform me of its contents? Or do you want to save me from exposure to complete retardation?

The government is adding something to the water, and when you use a sprinkler/hose, a rainbow appears because they are adding chemicals to the water supply.

Topic title made me think of that stupid video.

Also the "9/11 by the government" conspiracy makes no fucking sense whatsoever.

I used to have a manager that was convinced that Lamar Hunt was behind the JFK assassination. Apparently Hunt had been trying to move his football team (the Texans) from Dallas to Kansas City but was running into a bunch of roadblocks from the city of Dallas. So he had Oswald kill JFK to divert attention and allow him to discreetly move his team becoming the present day Chiefs.

Well she's got the sprinkler going, it's making a rainbow as sprinklers do, however this woman is so retarded and as no idea of basic physics.\
Here is what she says word for word:

"July 6, 2007, about 4:30 pm, I'm just wonderin' what the heck is in our water supply? What the heck is in our oxygen supply? (I shit you not she says that), of the matallic *mumble can't understand her* that creates a rainbow effect in a sprinkler, what is oozing out of our ground, that allows this type of effect to happen? not just around our sun and our moon anymore everywhere we look, the visible spectrum, in rainbows, this cannot be natural. We all know it wasn't somethin' that happened 20 years ago, but now it's happenin' now. We as a nation have got to ask ourselves what the hell is going on? What is oozing out of our ground?"

I facepalmed while watching that, I just want to beat her senseless with a physics textbook.

I love conspiracy theories. I don't take any of them seriously but they are very entertaining. Like religions.
If you liked the Illuminatus Trilogy (Hail Eris!), I'd recommend Umberto Eco's book, Foucault's Pendulum. The first half is like the Da Vinci Code (if Dan Brown actually knew how to write,) and the second half does to historical conspiracy theories what The Tick does to ninjas. And a large part of his theme is that conspiracy theories really DO have roughly the same role as religion--they let people believe that the world Makes Sense, and _someone_ is In Charge.
I'm a big fan of Eco and actually read FP for the second time a few months ago. Yes I do like the perspective he takes on conspiracy theories. I don't know if I like it as much as How to Travel with a Salmon but definitely a cool read.

Did you ever read Prometheus Rising? It's a good companion to the Illuminatus Trilogy. He does to the human mind what Paul the Samurai does to bread.

I heard something about most hookers being aliens once, but that was a long time ago and I don't remember it very well.

The Flat Earth Society. Yes, this is real.
I checked the "evidence" page, and they had a "come back when we have our act together" sign. Sigh.

I also checked another page which stated that if the earth were round, we'd fall off. In grade 11 physics, I can already disprove that...

I knew a girl who thought AIDS was created in a lab by the USA to control the black population. It's hard to even comprehend how crazy an idea this is.
